I have 2, each being 1 TB. I use one for photos, one for movies. Travel with both of them, but I am looking at going to SSD.

I generally prefer Western Digital, and in 20Plus years of PC consulting, building and such, I prefer Western Digital, but will occasionally use Seagate.
That said, my last Seagate (2 TB) external just took a dump and 1.7 TB of data is lost, unless I send it to a recovery service ($$$$).
So, now it's WD for me, and black if I want to spend the extra money.
You should know this about Seagate. They have built their market share for years by purchasing failing HD Manufacturers. So Far I know they bought out Quantum, Maxtor, LaCie (for their shoddy drive enclosures), and upped the quality control. That practice has, on occasion, bit them in the ass on their own quality control.
I have 5 of them and they are great.

I have three 4TB WD external drives. I have not had any problems with any of them. I also use WD Black Caviar hard drives in all three of my PC's and have had no issues with any of them either. IMO, WD drives are the best, and HGST drives are reported to be good as well. Like anything else though, any drive can fail at some point. Its not a matter of "IF" a drive will fail, but a matter of "WHEN" it will fail.
Western Digital or Seagate "Enterprise" drives are manufactured and rated at many thousands of hours longer than regular drives. They cost more also. Went with a HTSB drive a while back and was that ever a mistake. Western Digital and Seagate have online software that can, in many cases, repair a defective drive, or at least retrieve data from a bad drive. Think about the worst case scenario at the begining, and you will not be disappointed at the end. Spend what is appropriate and do not buy off market drives.

I use both WD and Seagate drives, but I only use the higher end units. I have a WD external Thunderbolt system with two 4TB RED drives in RAID 1. I have many other of the same drive types in several Synology NAS systems. Some have been in service over five years without issues. Remember, It's not IF your drive will fail, but when. If you plan that way everything should work out. Best of luck.

I use WD hard drives exclusively and I have for over 20-years. I currently have a 5Tb Passport for photo backup, a 4Tb Passport for Time Machine backup of my iMac and five (5) WD Red Drives in my Drobo RAID system.
Have used them for several years without any problems.

I have 2 4tb Western Digital external drives, ons SSD and one HD, that I use as double backups for my photos. So far they work great.

I just bought two of them. And had a 2 TB which held about 90,000 photos half of which were both JPEG and raw. I had good luck with the 2 TB and the 4s seem to be doing just fine only been using them for a couple weeks.

I think you posted this on the wrong thread.
I'm curious as to what back-up software all of you are using.
Backblaze.com. They put out a quarterly report on the thousands of drives they use for their backup service. This is Real data not just antidotal from a small sampling of users. It depends on the model but WD drives generally score well with Hitatchi having the best numbers.
