If you do a considerable amount of birds in flight, and with a 400mm lens, consider a Gimbal head, there are several on the market, Benro GH2, GH3

Avoid the ones from China.
A Gimbal head allows you to move smoothly through the shot, without jerking.

Ditto. You should get a gimbal head. More expensive but you risk a flop over with a ball head.

I can highly recommend the Gimbel Wimberley mounting for long lenses. It makes a 600mm f4 as simple as moving a feather.
If you use this mount, be sure to place screws at either end of the mount to keep the lens from sliding out.

Excellent advice. This is an important feature. Nothing is worse than having your camera and lens fall off the tripod no matter what the mount.
BTW, the Enduro GHB2 gimbal head has this feature built into the supplied mounting plate.
