This was taken in a little park in Indio, not too far from Coachella Fest. One of the neglected and forgotten. As you can see, he is wearing a coat. It was 95 degrees when I shot this. Nikon D5500, Nikkor lens, 18-200mm.

Yes! That’s what I’m trying to show in my photographs, the extravagant waste of money that is completely misdirected, when all you have to do is open your eyes and see where spending is tragically needed.

When I was a street cop I used to talk to people just like this, of all ages, on a daily basis. They came from many backgrounds as you can imagine. One was an attorney, many were veterans and so on. You would be surprised to learn that many of these people live this lifestyle because they WANT to. They are not all people who are living on the streets because their hospital bills drove them out of their homes. They are doing exactly what they want to do in a free country.

I appreciate that there is help in America for those who are having temporary problems but please do not judge every homeless person thinking they are forced into this position. They are not.

I know what you’re saying is true, to an extent. I’ve spent over three years making up bagged lunches for the homeless and getting to know them and gaining their trust. Some are Vets, some are drunks, some are addicts, and some (many) are mentally ill.

What I’ve found for the addicts is their addiction(s) is keeping them on the street. If they could afford housing AND still be able to use/drink/gamble, they would be off the street in a New York minute. Their “want” is not to live on the streets, it is to be able to “have their cake and eat it, too.”

As for the mentally ill? I can only direct them and feed them.

In any case, I’m not here to judge whether they deserve housing, clothing, or food. I’m here to do what I can for those in need, no matter the circumstances that led them to their need.

What a great character shot. Great in B&W. He appears to be homeless. I hope he has a place to sleep.

Thank you. My guess is that he is homeless, but is able to get a bed at the rescue mission at night. There they can shower, eat dinner, and safely sleep. In the morning, they are fed breakfast and then have to leave for the streets by 6 am.

[quote=dennis2146] They are doing exactly what they want to do in a free country

I don't think people want live a homeless life. They might choose this life but I think they do because the other choice is worst
A homeless life is degrading and dehumanizing life. Passersby s give you the "look"
They look towards you but don't see you
They pretend you're not there. They look at you with disgust and disdain. You have to take handouts in order to live or go dumpster diving in order to eat. If you're a woman, you keep yourself dirty and unattractive, so you won't be raped. If you're a male you probably carry a weapon so you won't be taken advantage by others. It's a very stressful life
I've never experienced being homeless, but I've worked with the homeless mentally ill. I can go on and on about this but it can get dark.

Exactly. Who would choose this life if there were better options?

You have me as quoting something that I did not say at all. That quote was from Charlie157. Please get your facts straight. I can get into enough trouble all by myself without your help. I also, from personal experience, do not agree at all with Charlie157 so do not want my name on his quote.

Sorry but you are using your life experiences to judge the life these people are living. These people have their own life experiences to go by and sure as hell do not want your life merging with theirs.

Check my post again. What you think is a quote is my comment.

I did check the post right now. You show a quote seemingly attributed to me but that was not by me.
