This is my first attempt at a macro shot. I don't have a macro lens, so I shot this with my Nikon D850 paired with a Nikon AF-S 24-70mm, f/2.8 lens. f/11, 1/400s, 24mm, ISO, 100. Comments please, including recommendations for a Nikon or comparable high-end macro lens. It's time
You know, your question really leads to personal preference so I will say I own 3 Nikkor micros and for me the 105 is the best of the lot. There's a lot to consider, AF or not, working distance desired or needed, etc. But after 40+ years using them that's my take. I can't address third part macro glass for you as I have never owned any. If you can I'd try renting a couple for a week & then decide. Happy hunting.
I use a Tokina 100mm, Dick. I really like it and it has good reviews and is not expensive. The only drawback is no VR. Macro focusing takes some getting used to but it is a fun journey. Keep at it.

This is my next attempt at a "macro" shot with the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm, f/2.8 lens. Shot at f/8@ 70mm, 1/200s, ISO 400. What do you think of this one?
More dof would help & darker, less busy background also would help. You’re getting the idea. It’s a very fussy task you’ve taken on. Patience is a virtue on such static subjects. Keep at it. Hand held? For best results when possible tripod, mirror up or whatever remote release system you have go a long way. Most all have fun.
