A friend got his yesterday and loves it. From what I've seen of his photos, it is a very impressive camera. Big sensor, fast f/1.8 lens, control ring, small size, a true "carry everywhere" pocket camera with amazing image quality. I want one!!! Anybody have a spare $650 they don't need? Now can't wait to see how Canon and Panasonic respond....

To me it is a mixed bag of better with some minor but annoying compromises, but clearly better than the Canon GX-1 which I own.
Sony is on the right track, but some worthwhile features are missing.
20MP sensor - good
10 fps burst - very good!
Close-up ability - very good
F/1.8 to f/5 - impressive.
No way to add a filter (ND or CP) - weak for a $650 camera
No hot shoe - disappointing
No articulating screen (and no viewfinder) - weak and glaring in bright sunlight
Manual focus? - Yup! Neat feature!
Price - shave off about $150 from the MSRP and it may be consideration worthy.
Right now, The Sony RX100 seems pricy and it may be worth waiting for its successor. Time will tell.

Just read a review of the new Pany LX7. 1.4 LENS, BIGGER SENSOR THAN RX100, wider 24mm, control ring, AND an expected price around $500. That's more like it! VERY interesting. Love these competitive camera tech wars!

I was wrong... the LX7 has a SMALLER sensor than the RX100. Sorry. Duh....
Anyone have the Sony RX100? This seems like a nice compact. I notice that photographers, such as my friend who works at the local newspaper, always carry a compact in their pocket so they're never without a camera. Seems smart to have the best compact you can find.

I ordered one from B&H. It will be here Wednesday.

you may find the pictures are as good as dslr!
with the only difference is you may have slightly less control but you will get more oictures in focus!!
Sony make killer cameras these days. and affordable.
fuji coming out with new mirrorless camera, nice but still 1000,00 with no lens !!

smart choice, you won't be disappointed.
A nice thing about this camera is you can hand hold these cameras, at a very slow shutter speed, and get more light, and still have a focused picture with no blur.
try hand holding a Dslr at 1/5 of a second and see how that works for you???

Jim,
The last SLR I owned was film. Two Nikon bodies and 8 lenses became near worthless! I had a medium format camera with three lenses too. Then I built a darkroom where I could do up to 16x20 in color. Doing that with a DSLR now would cost a fortune larger than I have, or will have.
The RX100 will allow me to learn Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, HDR and RAW for (relatively) a lot less money. And, it will take good quality video and I can learn Premier Elements too!

Got the RX100 and have been using it. I really like it so far. Can't believe the quality of pictures, even in low light.

I said that about the Sony HX9V I bought last year. I'm looking forward to finding how much different the RX100 is.
