A friend asked us (me and sleepydr) to take pics of a Viet Nam veterans baseball game. We have experience with BIF and shelters dogs running at mach 1.
But no experience at baseball. These folks cant afford a pro....
Cloudy, and outside.
No problem capturing action...but not people action at a baseball game.
Some suggested setting and advice?
Thanks in advance

What camera and lens do you plan to use?
With that long of a lens I'd think 1/1000 or faster. Try to anticipate the action. Where can you stand, along the sidelines or behind the batter, or flexible? Except for way in the outfield shots I'd try to shoot a little wide and crop in post, maybe do some burst shots for action.
How close to the baseball field will you be? I photograph Little League games frequently and I can get almost on the field. For this I use a Tamron 28 - 300. Wide open with ISO 800 and Auto ISO set to minimum shutter speed of 1/640. Nikon D800 in burst mode. Continuous auto focus.

Can you shoot from the dugout? Shoot as tight as possible filling the frame with the subject. Shoot at least 1/2000 at wide open. Auto white balance and auto iso. Anticipate the action as stated before. Shoot individual players before the game, get expressions. Capture the mood. Good luck and post pics.

Yes we will be able to shoot from the dugout.

That is a big help. Close to the action. Have fun..
With that lens you'll be able to cover the field.
Shooting from the dugout will get you some great shots, but move around.
Take shots of the pitcher from behind the catcher during warm-ups between innings.
Get shots of the infielder making a throw to 1st base from behind the 1st baseman.
As others side, anticipate the action.
Capture plays at the plate or second base when players are sliding.
If bright sun, be careful not to shoot into the sun.
Have a blast and enjoy the experience.
Oh, and I usually shoot 1200 and f8 in manual mode. I'll adjust the ISO as needed based on the sunlight.
This gets good depth of field and stops the action without blurred areas like thrown balls or bats.
Thanks to everyone for the input...it will be fun. You folks have given me lots of things to think about.

I shoot most sports at 1/1000, wide open, auto ISO. If shooting jpeg, either auto WB or select the proper WB. My preference is to shoot RAW, exclusively. Best of luck.
Most Vietnam vets will no longer be functioning at full speed.
You might want to have something a bit wider in addition to the 200-500. I would. Something like a 70-x00.
