The two photos 744 and 745 look to me like they're taken at a high elevation angle. If the camera is held near vertically it can't decide whether vertical is along the long or the short axis. I note this when I'm trying to copy something that I've placed on the floor and have my camera on a tripod above it. Some of the images come out one way and some the other.

Have you checked to see if the photo is rotated by viewing another way, or is it only the way DPP4 shows it?

Yeah, that's what I thought it might be, too.

Shooting with the camera pointed nearly directly downward (or upward for that matter), the orientation detectors in the camera body may not be able to decipher up, down, right or left!

I haven't seen that happen with any of my Canon though... but OTOH I also don't often take a shot pointed straight down or straight up.

I do always set my cameras to auto-rotate "in computer only". I don't have them rotate in camera (that way image playbacks are always presented on the LCD screen as large as possible... and it's no problem for me to simply rotate the entire camera 90 degrees to review a vertical shot)

Thanks for the reply PHRubin but shows the same in DPP4, PS, and Windows Photo Viewer.

I believe you have a definite point here, taking pictures straight down just in front of my feet trying to take photos of Ice Pellets to send to kids, they never seen any. I think you hit the head of the nail right on. Last time camera did this it was on tripod pointing straight down trying to take pics of old coins that I have. It was really going screwy multiple times at the time. This is the second time you have mentioned something to me with a possible solution. Stupid thing smarter than me, it knows which way is upright!! You got to be KIDDING me. So solution here is when you want to lock in format you see thru viewfinder turn AUTO ROTATE to OFF in Menu Settings. This has got to be the PROBLEM guys. Thanks a whole heap Guys you to amfoto1

Changing the menu settings for a few photos that happen to be taken with the camera pointing vertically up or down isn't worth doing. Since you can rotate the image in post, and since it's only a few photos that do that, I would think it's easiest just to think "...that's what happened..." and correct it in post. One click. No menus to search through for the auto rotate item.

Point well taken, just don't worry about it.

One thing you might look at is your firmware. Is it up to date? Sometimes there are bugs in firmware that are discovered and later fixed with updates. Almost every Canon camera that I have purchased needed a firmware update right away. Just google firmware for your camera and see if you have the latest. The latest is version 1.1.0

Thanks jeep_daddy have checked with Canon and surprised me no firmware update as of yet. Now days when you walk out the store the items are obsolete with the firmware and need update.
Thanks Bob
