Yes, a photo would tell all. The easy way to tell with that lens is as follows: an adjustable aperture at the bottom is a type 'D', and no aperture ring is a type 'G' lens. The type 'G' lens will work on all modern bodies. The type 'D' most likely will not work on the D3xx and D5xx bodies.
Either type will yield very good images.

The G type of this lens does not have a built-in focus motor and will not auto-focus on the D3xxx or the D5xxx series bodies or on the D40 or D60 series either.
