Can anyone suggest a remote shutter release that can be used 10-15 feet away from the camera and is reliable .
I bought one for my Nikon D3400 on Amazon, I believe it was under $10. The only problem I had with it was that the battery life wasn't good.
I use the Vello, have been well satisfied. Works at long distance and in front as well as behind the camera. You can use the remote or at the camera.
I use a Vello FreeWave Plus Wireless. It works well.

Have you tried just setting a 2-sec or 10-sec shutter delay? I have a remote but seldom use it because shutter delay works so well in most circumstances.

Get an RF release, avoid IR at all costs due to short range and poor reliability as well as poor battery life. Yongnuo and Vello both make great units, and very reasonably priced as well.

I use Vello Free wave on 3 cameras.. I was using it on a Nikon D70s.. but the camera gave up so I got a D7000 and got a new connector cable for the Vello.. works great even out to 100 feet or so. I also use it on a Nikon D610, Nikon D7100 and of course the D7000... no issues and works great. I did (in addition) get the Vello wired release because it does timed interval releases and very long timed shot... the Freewave doesn't do that as well.
Amazon sells a Vivitar Universal Wireless remote, with dongles for Nikon, Sony, Canon and others for $ 24.95. It's good at over 100 yards. I use one for birding, for remote camera(s) at weddings and for family selfies....
