I liked this lens disputed its weight however the auto focus at times quites working if I let it rest a while it usually resumes working. I purchased this lens used several years ago. My dilemma is should I just use it with manual focus and look at the Tamron g2 70-200 2.8 or should I see if Nikon or other repair shop can do something

Thanks as always your help is much appreciated

Joe

Have you cleaned the contacts on the lens? Or considered a call to Nikon to get their opinion? Sending it in to Nikon would be less than a new lens.

Call & talk to CRIS camera in Chandler Arizona. They are the largest authorized Nikon repar facility in the US. I’ve dealt with them & consider them honest & competant. Then you will know what the possibilities are so you can best decide how to proceed.

I have the same lens. Last year I was getting frustrated with the button that lets you move from auto focus to manual focus. I brought it into Nikon in Melville, NY. They fixed it, cost me quite a bit, but it is now perfect! I think it was about $300 to repair.

I had no problem when I brought it right to the service counter. I sometimes think the people that answer the phone have no clue. I have a friend who is an NPS manager. I will message him and see what he says. Will keep you posted.

So I just heard back from my friend. I am glad I had it serviced last year.

*We don’t have parts... it’s a 15 year old lens... at least. 3 generations of 70-200 after it...*

Wasn’t aware it was still being made.
Sure enough, B&H has them new.
I had an early model.
Mine was worth repairing.
After 20 years of use it came down with a case of sticky aperture blades.
Had it fixed by a member here who has a shop in Colorado.
Look up Rick Riggins:

There was an AF-S version that was discontinued when the 70-200 came out and I've heard it had issues with it's AF Is this an AF-S version? I have the original version and have not had any issues.
