I never had much faith frankly in 3d tracking/focusing. But, after utilizing for a butterfly that flew away on me, I was pretty impressed. not sure if it would work as well in other scenarios but this butterfly was all over the place. You be the judge. Final shot has some blur on the wing. D750, 24-70 2.8 with ss of 1/3200, f5.6 with auto ISO coming in around 2200. i wanted a high shutter speed and a little wiggle room on the aperture. I shoot manual with auto iSO quite often. spot metering with CHS shutter.

I finally tried 3d focus last year on Hummingbirds and it worked like a charm, It produced razor sharp images of the Hummingbirds. The subject has to have enough contrast difference to the background and when this happens the results are excellent. Tried 3d on flying birds with sky as the background just didn’t work because of lack of contrast.
