Hey all! It is my pleasure to bring you a new pic this week to make your own. One of the most beautiful state parks in TN is Rock Island. Lots of beautiful waterfalls and scenic spots. (there IS a waterfall in this pic ;) This pic is one I took with my daughters Canon a couple of years ago and did not get the lighting just right but I believe you guys and gals can bring it out with a little creative editing. Have fun with it!
Please feel free to download the image presented here and edit it anyway you think is appropriate. Color shifts, composites, black and white conversions, crops...Whatever you feel the image needs. When you have finished your edit, please post it in this thread. Edits will be accepted until Thursday at 9pm Eastern Time. At that time no more edits will be accepted and we will start the voting. Thank you all for your participation.
Here's my try. Tried to add texture to the rocks and enhance the waterfall a bit

Saturation seems a little too low and there is a terrible halo around the edges of the tree. At the least you should try a PS mask to control the brightness in the sky.

Thanks Bob
I'll try the mask to control the halo. Still learning PS with Post.
I'm really bad at this, but I'm trying to learn. I did this in LR (an old version on this computer). I took the highlights down, but that actually made too much definition between the blue sky and the blown sky, which I don't like. I added fill light that opened up the shadowed areas. That I did like. I tried to get rid of the flare circle on the tree, but nothing seemed to work. I punched up the clarity that brought out more of the midtones. I love the waterfall through the tree!
This probably needs someone who's good at changing skies.

Very very nice - all of you! Don't know where that flare (or smudge) came from as it wasn't on some of my other pics but you have all done a nice job getting around it and capturing this magical place.
Heavy crop. I felt the small waterfall should be a little more prominent
Nice - there were many smaller waterfalls in this area - I would love to go back with my increased knowledge (and better camera ;) and take advantage of the beauty there.

Thanks, these weekly challenges are always fun. Participants come up with some neat interpretations.
BW edit in LR. went more simplistic, heavy crop and tried to utilize the zone system of Ansel Adams. I'd probably try again and go tighter and closer to the big rocks in the center. would try to use a triangle and rule of odds compositionally. That said, not sure if I achieved much!!!! updated with second edit
Great pic Deer. I've been here in TN for almost 20 years and still haven't been to Rock Island ... yet. ;-) Here's my submission ...
I like your sun flair Don. I tried the same thing a couple of days ago but lost my patients.
The major improvements on mine were opened shadows, whites and increased exposure. I did a mid tone luminosity mask to brighten the mid tones. The sky is the same but I added the clouds with a white cloud brush.

Thanks Jim. There are a couple of different ways to do it Photoshop, depending on the effect you are trying to achieve. The glowing sun, the beams and the lens flare are three separate techniques that I merged together for the final result.
I do like the results you achieved as well!
