Trying to decide between the two lenses above.
Your opinion will be appreciated.
I use a Nikon 5500.
Thanks.

As a third contender, the NIKKOR 10-20.

A bit slower, a bit wider, as sharp or sharper than either, instantaneous focus, a lot lighter and a lot less expensive.

It makes a big deal to a lot of folks here also, it’s a VR lens.

I have the Nikkor 12-24 F/4.0 DX lens and I'm very happy with it. I don't typically use it in very low light, so I use a shutter speed that negates the need for VR even with my slightly shaky hands. I have never used the other lenses you mentioned, so can't give you a comparison.

FWIW - it is a Gold Band Nikkor which is supposed to be a high quality lens.

The Tokina is very, very sharp, well built, and considerably cheaper.

I own the 12-24 f4 AF-S and I did own the 12-24 f4 Tokina once. Both lenses are sharp but the Nikon lens is better corrected.
You cannot go wrong with either one. Some good bargains if you buy the 12-24 f4 Nikon lens in the used market.

Have you considered the greater range Tokina 12-28mm f4 ?? - https://kenrockwell.com/tokina/12-28mm.htm

The Tokina 12-24 was my best lense purchase for sure. I paid $150 used
For sure there are better super wide angle Lenses but I would rather buy a second car.

Now I have a wider angle than my cell phone.
If you can't outdo you cell phone what is the point of a dslr?

Most useful lense in the bag. Best for the money. Great for video.

Sorry I can't compare the two but I vouch for the Tokina.

I have the Nikon 12-24. It's very sharp. I agree with Nikon on a Nikon. Also for resale value.

I love my Nikon 14-24mm with my Nikon D750. Never had the Tokina. Since you have the Nikon 5500 (not a full frame camera but an APC crop-sensor), the Nikon 10-20 was already suggested. That's an excellent lens also. I had one with my Nikon D7000 and that was a great combo. Got a lot of "money" shots off that combo that I have won major contests with and still regularly sell. Just sold a 24x36 inch metal print for home decor last week that was taken with that Nikon D7000 and the 10-20mm Nikon. Tack sharp from front to back and side to side. That same photo is displayed in a regular print at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, FL in a 36x54 sized print. Bought the 10-20mm on eBay and then sold it on eBay close to what I bought it for 2 years earlier. Bought my Nikon 14-24 on Nikon's refurbished sale.

Another vote for the 10-20. Best buy I've made in a Nikkor lens. But beware compatibility. It's OK with the 5500 but only if the firmware's been updated (won't work with the 5000 or 5100). And on some cameras like my 7100 the VR is "always" on because the lens doesn't have a VR on/off switch and the 7100 body doesn't either. But it is inexpensive, lightweight and very sharp and is the FF equivalent of a 15-30.

I have just about all the wide angles, and the Sigma 8-16 is the one I choose by far the most
