Great idea. I bought a SB-400 used for $40.00. It is great! I have a D500 and carry the SB-400 with TTL flash cord where ever I go. It fits in any of my pockets. I have 2 older D200's with pop up flashes so I missed having one on my D500. I have a SB800 which is too big to carry around every where. I was really impressed with the SB400 as I also read the Rockwell review. It is not a full blown speed light being limited to 1/250 sec max where as the bigger newer speed lights will go as high as 1/8000. It also is an on camera only flash and won't work off camera with the Nikon CLS system. It won't work with light sensors triggers or radio triggers either. Believe me I tried so I got a 3 meter TTL flash cord and it works great off camera that way and with the the tilting flash head you can aim it anywhere. I also have a flash mount on my mono pod that I can mount an umbrella to also. Bingo instant soft box flash with 10' flash cord. It's great for filling in shadows.
Attached are some examples of a flash assist on a gloomy, cold day at the Dallas Art Fest yesterday.
I bought my SB400 years ago, and couldn’t be happier now. I bought a Nikon D500 last month. It’s like I bought it years in advance for the D500. Works perfectly.
Still use my Nikon Speedlight SB20......very effective
