These plants are found all along Georgia highways in the Spring. Normally about a foot tall, I ran across this example that is about 4 feet tall. Thought I would share these examples that highlight the blooms. Can you identify it?

👍🏻👍🏻 May even be a distant relative of the artichoke. I have seen similar ones on west coast with a purple looking flower like that.

It's called the Horrible Thistle or Yellow Thistle. When in full bloom they turn purple.

It looks like the same thistle that grows wild here. Many have very pink blossoms. When the blossoms are fresh, it is a very pretty plant and the butterflies love it!

The state it is most commonly found is Pennsylvania but it grows from Maine to northern Florida and can be found as far south at the keys and parts of central America and Mexico and the West Indies. Several species of birds are quite fond of its seed so it grows in a lot of places.

So far nearly everyone is right! I think you're referring to cardoon, also known as artichoke thistle. It's related to both artichokes and thistles, which are all in the sunflower family. With cardoon, you eat the stems, not the flowers.

I'd go with THISTLE. Leaves look a bit thinner and thornier (but no sharper) than those found here - and no.4 shows the beginnings of turning purple in the flower.

I feel sure it is a type of thistle. Finches love the seeds of them. The ones I grew up with are purple.

yellow thistle. Cirsium horridulum ( If the sap is clear). It follows the warm coast clear up into Massachusetts.
