Geez, that's a hard one. It depends on what I'm shooting. A hammer is not the only tool in the tool box. I guess my 28-85 f3.5-4.5 Nikon, if I had to pick (sort of a Swiss Army Knife.) Otherwise I try to stick with primes mostly.
For a long time it was a fairly cheap Tamron 18-250. This made a good carry lense. Several pics I have posted were with this on Canon T1i, camera now with son - in - law, lense sold with Canon 7d2. So today think 24-105mm F4L. But maybe my old and trusty 50mm F2.5 macro....
Olympus Zuiko 12-40 f2.8 Pro for their M43 system. Excellent quality in an all around lens.
Sony Zeis 135mm/1.8 prime on a full frame body. Dreamy bokeh.

My current favorite is the Nikon 105mm 1.4.
Birds of a feather. Same here.
70-200 2.8
Heavy, ostentstious but love the pics and it "hits" AF every time
2nd choice is 50mm1.4.- most creative options BUT like a beautiful and needy wife, needs lots of attention and mgmt to get good results.
(Oohhh...I am going to get in trouble for that metaphor...)
As others have stated, it depends, and I'm not talking about adult diapers.
My all time favorite general purpose lens is my EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L IS USM. I call it the white elephant.
For portraiture and the like, my EF 85 f/1.2L, about as bokehlishious as they get.
For interior and landscape, my EF 16-35 f/2.8 L II.
For wildlife, Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II IS USM with EF 1.4 III extender. Nikon, AF-S 200-500 on a D500.
For macro, EF 100 f/2.8L IS USM.
But, if I had to pick one focal length, I agree with Jerry, 28-300; got it in both Canon and Nikon.

It is beautiful to look at, and to use.

I just got that lens a week ago. Yup, it’s very nice. Impressed thus far.
Canon 35mm f/2 IS USM. I've got almost a dozen lenses, but this is the one that sits on my Canon 7D Mark II at least 50% of the time.

45mm F2.8 PC-E for landscape and closeups, Sigma 150-600 Sport for wildlife and landscape.
For me, probably the 47mm f/2.8 on my Fujica auto m 35 rangefinder camera. No other lens gives me that kind of look.
My current “favorite” is a Rokinon 12mm f/2 on a Fuji. Having a lot of fun with it....
