Can someone explain in simple terms the difference between LR profiles and LR presets, and when you would use or not use each? Thanks.
I'd guess that a "profile" is what something more on the mechanical side that is SUPPOSE to be, (like a lens characteristic), and a "preset" is an ACTION that someone creates to do something to the photo, like to add a color or white balance. (Again, I'm just guessing since I don't use Abobe products.)
A profile applies a defined group of exposure, etc settings like you would do in camera with Camera Vivid, Landscape, Monochrome, etc. to mimic, with RAW files, what you can do with JPEGS.
A preset is a part of your workflow that you want to save and use again. So you've spent hours getting the exposure settings correct for a landscape image, with the amount of exposure, highlight, Clarity, DeHaze, etc, etc dialed down just right, and want to be able to use it again. So you create a Preset which then appears in your preset menu.
Matt Kloskowski, who gets really excited in this video, goes over the details:

Adobe just updated Lightroom and made some major changes on both presets and profiles. Go to Adobe's site to get your question answered.
A preset changes your Develop sliders....does the editing for you. Profiles change the makeup of the photo and you to what editing you want from there.
My interpretation is that you do your basic developing and then you can add a profile to it. Like a layer
Profiles exist in Photoshop (PS) and not in Lightroom (LR).
In PS, profiles mathematically define the way that a device interprets the level values that determine color in an image. In PS a preset is simply a collection of saved settings that are easily reloaded to make a tool behave the exact same way each time it uses the preset. Presets are organized into sets that you can load for each tool or panel and then easily selected.
In LR presets save sets of setting to apply to other photos over and over again.

Chief Rob,
That changed last week.

Profiles change how the picture looks without changing any of the sliders, while a preset is something you create or has been created by moving sliders and changing settings and then saving it as a preset so that you can use is over and over again. But since the sliders have been moved, it's different than starting with sliders in the 0 positions with profiles.

Profile first, then exposure adjustment or presets. Profiles are the groundwork.
