This was something I intended to do for quite a while. Since I finally got a DSLR and needed to practice with it I shot the Hydrants in the downtown area where I live. Many years ago art students from area schools were invited to beautify our downdown. My first DSLR photoshoot was to capture their art to share. My camera is a Canon 40D and I used my 50mm 1.8 MK1 lense (see avitar). I set the aperture at 1.8 and WB to cloudy and went for a walk around the downtown. I didn't get as much blur in the background as I had hoped for. My guess is the 50mm wasn't the best choice for this. Most of the shots were about 4-5 feet from the subject. I'll try a different lens next time.

There are twenty of them that I found. They are all in the downtown area. All of the rest in the city are standard yellow.
Here are some more for you.

Very nice set. They did a nice job. They look like pretty old hydrants. Is this in an old section of town?

Thanks for the comment Erv. Yes it is likely the oldest part of the city.

I like them all except for the ones with military themes. Might just be me but having dogs pee on that theme just don't sit well with me.

As noted these are in the downtown area dogs are not roaming free. I agree about them urinating on the hydrants, I would expect their owners to have some respect regarding that.

Better to be seen and peed on than not seen at all. They are painted on one of the best advertising mediums available in the city. Each artist should be proud and I am sure that any veteran or family member of any of the forces would see this as a massive tribute.
EOS User as the 50mm F/1.8 minimum focus distance is 0.45m you could have gotten closer and shot from ground level up. This would have added a bit more BG blur and an interesting perspective.
I think they look really good, nice idea, a good way to make something ordinary look interesting, thanks for showing

I like them. Someone had a good idea. If I understood you correctly, this art was done by the art students you mentioned in your OP. Is this project still going on?
