I am looking for an inexpensive, light, compact, waterproof camera for my grandson? It should have at least a 5x optical zoom. He is a competitive swimmer, loves to hike, will be going to the ocean, and will be visiting Yellowstone soon. Any suggestions? Any experience with cameras of this type. I would prefer to keep the cost below $150. Last year, Sams Club had some, but does not have this "seasonal" item any longer.

Olympus Tough TG-5 Digital Camera.....solid and very good quality on land too....her last one lasted 4 years until my son forgot to close and lock the camera....looks like a few dollars more than you want to spend but if you read the reviews it may be worth it for you....also get a float ring so he doesn`t sink the camera....I know this camera is tough and well able to take a good drop to concrete

Look at the Olympus Touch series. I have an older Touch TG-3 that goes with me everywhere. As an environmentalist volunteer I go into a lot of wet, muddy, sandy, or other camera hostile locations and it has lasted nearly five years. The built in microscope mode is a big plus for me.

Looking for these
Greetings...I have a Nikon coolpix 7900 point and shoot with a Fantasea CP-7 underwater housing I'm no longer using. Please look up the specs to see if this is what your looking for. The $150 is a fair price for this combo. The camera is 7.1mp. The housing has never flooded. respectfully trainspotter.
The Fuji XP120. Decent enough and inexpensive. Does not shoot raw.
Some pics taken with it.
Olympus Tough series with a float. I got my granddaughter the TG5 last June, more than you want to spend, but she still has it which is a recorded for her.;0)

Lots of good choices. For a Tough camera, I would avoid used.

Checked it out. Had a kid who broke everything but a Pentax K1000, Bridgestone MB2 Mountain Bike and a Toyota Truck. This would fit the bill. It's more expensive than your budget, but I think this is really a buy once Camera unless it gets lost. It has a learning life to it with RAW, 12 MP, 4K, tracking focus and 2 add on lenses to provide growth in vision. The feature I was most impressed with, not that it's a techno wonder, but it is a pain in extreme weather (camera shoots to 14 F) is it is fog proof with a protective layer over the lens. Also waterproof to 50 ft.
Limitations: No Shutter priority (I wouldn't miss it) and limited ISO to 1600, I think. But with an f f2 lens and in body 5 axis stabilization it should perform with low light. I would LOVE one for me. Even if I'm not water sealed anymore.
There is a $300 model which is quite similar, looks like it is more of a go pro next step. But has great still specs, too. It's 8 MP and goes to 100ft under water.
There are a few others. I believe Pentax has one.
Shop. But I think this is a camera that you will only have to buy once--as lnog as you can attach it the kid's body.

Nikon AW-130. Or go here, their are so many choices you head will spin. I would recommend a video underwater camera, kids love that stuff.
