Older Camera and Kit Lens - Savannah, GA street photography

Although I really like my current and more expensive gear, I learned a lot by practice/mistakes with older cameras and kit lenses. All of these pics were taken with a Nikon d5100 and their 18-105 kit lens which I finally sold a couple of years ago (regrettably). At one time, I would take close to 100k pics a year (that's a lot of mistakes). Outside during the day (sunny or cloudy), most gear works really well. I still learn a lot, still practice, but hope newer and less experienced photographers don't shy away from challenging situations because of gear. Most times, unless you are shooting in low light without flash, you can achieve pretty good if not excellent results. Just my opinion and not trying to pontificate.

Nice work on these. And I agree--one doesn’t have to spend a gazillion dollars to get good photos unless he wants to.

I would not beat yourself about your mistakes. I have been a serious photographer since 1978 when I got my first SLR camera in 1978. But in 2006 I bought a used Olympus 3.2 MP point and shoot. I have never used a digital camera till then. It had a sensor to die for and it took great photo colors. I used it to take thousands of photos and had a lot of great ones and well, quite a few of not to great ones. In the early days of my getting that camera I kept all of the photos and ended up wondering why I was running out of space as I would store my photos on CD disks. Now I edit a lot and only keep the best. What I learned though from that little camera is that it is not the camera that takes the photos it is the person who uses what it can do. If you told me as a kid I would be taking bee and slug photos, I would have told you, you were nuts. I learned a lot about macro from that little camera and had a lot of enjoyment from it, until it gave up the ghost.
