I have a D800 & was considering a D850, but since i do not always carry a separate flash i rely on the built in flash.
Why did they eliminate this handy feature??

Possibly for the same reason there is no built-in flash on the top model D5.

The Nikon D5, D500 (crop sensor) and D850, does not have a pop up flash, because it makes the weather sealing better.
Nikon claims mainly for weather sealing.

Those pop up thingys are almost useless. Anyonethat can drop over 3 grand for a camera can afford 1 or 200 bucks on a flash.
Other than fill flash outside during the day, why would you not have an external flash for a camera of this stature? Not trying to be pejorative in my response. However, I do like a pop-up as it acts as a trigger for off camera flash with the CLS system Other than that.........
The 3 cameras mentioned are compatible with Nikon's rf system for flash and remote firing. The only downside to the system is $$$$, but it is quite a system. I sometimes set a flash outside when shooting birds through a window. I can set the flash up anywhere without concern for the wall.

Rant warning.... In my opinion Nikon seems to hold back on features, maybe I'm wrong, but it appears you still have to buy the WR-R10 adapter for the D5, D500 and D850 in order to make use of RF based flash triggering...
this sort of eliminates any advantage of weather sealing when you have to have the rubber side hatch open to plug in the RF transceiver. This should have been a built in standard several years ago with no need to buy an add on wart that has to be plugged into the side of the camera. EVERY Nikon DSLR released for the last few years should have had this as well as USB 3 support for tethering built in as standard issue (maybe even WiFi just because it's super cheap though I'd rather have bluetooth and a phone app for remote shutter release, also very cheap to implement). I love my Nikon cameras but Nikon is going to loose the race dragging their feet on new technology - there's no excuse for the system to cost $$$$ - Yongnuo is doing it for about $100. They have to make the best camera with the most bang for the buck or this is just going to be a long slide to oblivion.
Whew... Sorry for the rant... I'm also an Apple guy and have the same frustration with them.

I believe most professional photojournalists, sports and wildlife photographers who use Nikons would have little use for those features.

Because the D850 is a Professional Camera and a pop up flash would be useless. That and using all the real estate in the pentaprism makes for a much brighter and more detailed viewfinder.

If you worked your way through all the amazing features of the D850, by the time you got to the end, you would have forgotten about warts. And, in my opinion, WiFi on a Pro body is superfluous. Leave it on and the radio boosts power to find a connection that will kill your battery. My D850 has been in Airplane mode since I took it out of the box.

If you take a look at the WR-R10 it looks like it provides a pretty good weather seal when screwed into the camera.

Not only for weather sealing but it makes the camera body just a little bit stronger. Cameras that have a built-in flash basically have a big section cut out of the top of the camera body.
