Hi, I do a bit of online gaming, hence the unusual user name. :) My son does a bit of photography and got me interested about it so the other day I ordered a camera which should be here Monday. What I ordered was a kit. This is what I ordered. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0764H8FQC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'm retired so have time and enough resources to get what I would like to, at the same time I don't want to go too overboard.. :) What would be a good telephoto lens to have. I've read that the stock 75-300 mm which comes with some packages isn't the best choice. Guess I just want something that would be a good all around telephoto to do many things. Any suggestions?

At this point, the "best choice" would be reading the manual, looking for how-to articles online, and using the gear you have. Unless you plan to start selling photos immediately, learn technique. Before spending another cent, post questions here and get opinions. Also, google your question. If you are trying to decide between Lens A and Lens B, Google Len A vs Lens B. Enjoy the process.

The many accessories included in bundles such as this link tend to be a mixed bag of quality and usefulness. Reading the list, I would refrain from using the filters as they'll likely be a lower grade glass with a negative impact on the image quality of your EF-S 18-55 lens. Canon has a new 70-300 lens that is a great value at $500 (EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM). New cameras and lenses, with US warranties, sell at the same lowest prices everywhere, whether you use Amazon, B&H, Adorama for online ordering for future purchases and comparing prices. Use sales taxes, if any, and shipping costs to differentiate candidate vendors.

Welcome and enjoy.

The Canon 100-400L is a great lenses but about $2K and another $429 for the 1.4x extender to get even longer but it then becomes an f/8 lens and your camera will not autofocus at f/8. Tamron and Sigma make 100-400s for less than around $800 (the Tamron has an optional tripod collar) and both make very good 150-600s. The Tamron G1 version is the cheapest, Sigma C just under $1K (but not weather sealed), the Tamron G2 list $1400, and the Sigma S (weather sealed and heavy "pro" construction) for $1800 to $2000. The Sigma C and Tamron G2 pretty much tie for the best overall image quality of the 150-600s. Your camera will AF with all 4 of the 150-600 lenses.
Note the 150-600s can be hand held and so can the 100-400s though the Canon being an L(think pro) lens it is fairly big and heavy. But with all of the 150-600s you will be more comfortable with a monopod or tripod to support the weight over long periods. I prefer a tripod with gimbal head for my long heavy lens.
If you want to save weight or don't need the super high image quality I and most other bird photographers want then I would say the Tamron 100-400 with the $150 tripod collar would be the best choice and still stay under $1K. After you get experience and if you get into birds/wildlife/action/sports you can think about the more expensive lenses and maybe a body upgrade to get f/8.0 focusing and more frames per second.

Be aware that what you ordered is a "Grey Market" camera and you will get no factory warranty on it. And most of the accessories bundled with it are literally worthless.

33 st camera is NOT a Canon authorized dealer, so anything they "SAY" needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Read their reviews on Ripoff Report and BBB sites.

Look at the warranty quote from one of their other Canon camera package deals:

Suggestion - if not too late, cancel the order and start from scratch.

Hi, I am also new as well, I purchased some refurbished gear to keep in my budget. Depending on what you are planning to shoot. But a 70-300mm has been recommended to me. I currently have an 18-135mm which is my all-around lens, also I have a 55-250 for my telephoto which is better in my opinion than the 75-300mm, if you need the extra 50mm focal length, then pay a little extra and go for the 70-300mm which is considered pretty decent from what I reviewed. I am in the same conundrum as well, as some of my friends say I have to have a 50mm prime lens. Hope my little insight to what I've discovered helps. Happy shooting.

Thanks all for your advice, guess I'll hope for the best on the camera as I need to stay within a certain budget at the moment. I should be in better shape in a few months and will probably wait till then to get any other gear. Just trying to learn as much as possible right now and appreciate all those who took the time to reply, thanks again.

Check places like facebook marketplace, let go, b&h photo. You can find some really great deals from previous beginners like us that are selling their beginner lenses. Buying L lenses and whatnot is for professionals, stick within your budget till you are sure you want to pursue this farther. Good luck.

MT, I know this is often the case with bundles like this on Amazon. However, in the link the OP gave, it does specifically state that this camera comes with the 1 year Canon USA Factory Warranty. I looked up 33 Street Camera, and they are surprisingly listed as an authorized Canon Dealer. She might be ok, if this is truly a U.S. model. No doubt that they also sell grey market cameras, like Focus Camera and other shady/shadowy vendors, but from the listing they are presenting this particular camera as a U.S. Model. Having said that, I wouldn't recommend someone purchase from a 3rd party vendor like this on Amazon, because you just don't know what you will be getting. As you said, the extras will most certainly be worthless.

Rasppe - as suggested by others, consider whether you can cancel the order or simply return unopened / unused. I say this in response to your idea of staying in a budget. If BestBuy is an option, the SL2 camera & lens in the original Amazon link is selling for $650 today. The only thing "missing" from a camera and lens package at a bigbox is 1 or 2 - 32GB SD memory cards needed to record images within the camera. You can gauge the additional expenses from the Amazon bundle and whether those items are the best use of a limited budget. There are other Rebel bodies in packages with the same lens available for even less. The other bodies are less "new" than the brand new released SL2, but the images will be the same at this product tier in the Canon line, consider a T6 / T5 ($450 ish at BestBuy) or the slightly upgraded 'i' versions of the same (T6i / T5i).

most of the stuff in that add is junk. I bought a package like that a longtime ago. ( sans camera) it all just sits in the bag that came with it. Great to learn what it does but not much else.

Hello, I puchased a used 70-300 L, can't use 1.4 extender, but I am extremely satisfied.
