I am attending probably 7 weddings this year and that is one thing I always suggest to the Brides to Be - Get a good photographer! I did and it's one thing I am so thankful for (even though in the 90's, candid shots were not as popular and I wish I had more) I always suggest getting a great baker to do your cake as well....it is a lasting joke in our family about one member and her unfortunately awful "sawdust cake" ;)

Having been at the check writing end of two weddings in recent years, I feel that everything to do with a wedding is a rip-off - except for the photographers. I feel they earned their money and we were delighted with the results. Of course having two beautiful daughters helped.

Years back I was asked to do a wedding but I could not because of another wedding I was doing. When the person that had asked me to do the wedding showed me the proofs there was not one picture that had the full brides dress. It was always cut off at the bottom. They paid for a professional that was recommended to them. They thought they had a good photographer but what got was regrets. So even if you spent the money, it was just thrown away.

Just a short story. I used to work for a studio with an attached camera store. When discussing a brides upcoming wedding her father was upset with the price. He said he could buy a camera and take his own photos. We were more than happy to sell him a camera. We showed him the basics and how to load the film. He came in after the wedding and was bragging how great the wedding was and the great photos he got. The only thing he had a problem with was how to get the film out of the camera. As he was saying that he popped the back open and destroyed, exposed, the entire roll. After he left we all laughed until we cried. I still kinda bad for his daughter.

This was very interesting reading. I am now 83 years young. During my life I think I have done more than 600 weddings, perhaps 15 or more funeral studies. Etc, Etc. Used 4x5 speed graphic for BxW work, 1 or 2 rolls for Color in my Rollie.
Always used a second light on a stand for modeling and composition control. Never took a picture without checking the Brides dress and flow. Took extra time to do some detail shot of other wedding items, cake, rings, programs, Bride with the minister, Groom with the minister, The limo and driver, etc.
My reason for telling this is that todays digital imaging has made us all Lazy. You all must learn to Plan ahead, if not sure, put it in your own planning and shooting book. It is an important part of the couples and family life. Please trust it with the planning and respect that it deserves.

Sounds like any bride who chose you for her wedding made the right choice. If I had another wedding to plan...or write checks for!...I'd look you up👍

Danni, Thank you for the vote of confidence. It may sound funny but once in a while I do miss it.
Fully retired now but still shooting what I want.

Wedding photography was the hardest thing I ever did as a “pro”. The quotes are due to the fact that you never stop learning doing this kind of work. I never used a 35mm camera except as a backup (Canon F1) and only used it once for that purpose. A day of constantly running and shooting with an RB 67, loading film when I could (220). And chasing down parents, grandparents, in-laws and all the rest. Then getting those shots I promised...I delivered 8 by 10 proofs in an album, usually within a week to ten days.
Going from 8 am to 11 pm and making only a per print fee was insane. But these were farm folks and came by their money via hard work so I never complained. But it was a tough way to earn a living and feed a family!
