Varience of aspect ratios between sensors, or film for that matter, and final viewing/displaying has been and likely always will be primary problem. The make a 3:2 image into a 5:7 print will always mean cropping. Geometry rules whether we like it or not. Sigh.

Yes, no complicated or precise math is needed. This has always been an 'issue' - even with film a photographer had to photograph 'a little too much' so that s/he could make necessary adjustments.
