I love my 70-200 f4 VR. I do not shoot sports or wildlife. Shoot with D810. I have an opportunity to purchase the Nikkor 70-200 2.8G ED VRII, about 4 years old and in EX condition. After buy/sell, the net cost to upgrade will be about $600-$700. In your opinion, does it make sense to do this, or keep what I have until I am prepared to move up to the 2.8E FL ED VR? This is not about 'need'. Thanks for your feedback.

You are saying you are happy with your lens. Do you need the f2.8 ?
If I were you I would stay with what I have.

That's a tough call. You would gain one stop of light, but do you want to pay that much for that little? See if you can find comparisons of the F/4 and the version of the F/2.8 you're considering.

considering that it is being used with a d810, I would stick with the f4.

So far, you all agree with reviews. 2.8G, without the need for 2.8; is not a significant upgrade. You are only reinforcing what I know I should not do.

IMHO don’t do it.

The 1 stop in blur isn’t that much and the difference in weight is quite a bit.

You owe it to yourself to look at the Tamron 70-200 G2 before you make any purchase decisions.

I agree, if I decide to do the upgrade.
Thanks.

I want to thank you guys for your advice. I decided to stay with the f4 as the 2.8G is not enough of an upgrade for my use. Looking for something else to obsess about.
Thanks.
Jon

I have the same upgrade lens you are considering, and like it a lot. BUT it is heavier and bulkier than your current lens. The F4 version does a quite commendable job optically, so you are not really gaining with the faster lens on that basis alone. I bought my F2.8 to shoot candids indoors without flash, for snipers like me it works great and the bokeh is nice wide open too! But I wonder: how often will the faster lens get used if you get tired lugging it around? Myself I have a light zoom similar to yours for fun shooting when I carry it all day.

What does the f4 not do for you that you think the f2.8 will do? (besides just being bigger and heavier.)
