Look for some of the past posts, that topic has been discussed to death. I am sure it will be discussed here again. Look on YouTube, lots of info there.

In a nutshell - a raw file is a proprietary file that contains all of the information (a lot) for an image the camera captured, a
JPEG is that information converted to a standard file format (smaller) that is readily displayable by browsers (and other programs like Word).

People have taken billions of people in JPEG, with fine results. Raw give you a bit of an advantage if you want to get the most out of an image, but raw always requires processing.

To me, RAW is sort of like a negative, while jpg is like a drugstore print--which, sometimes, are just fine.

At the minimum an image file must contain 3 values for each pixel. One for red, one for green and one for blue. The JPEG met this requirement.
The RAW file however only contain 1 value for each pixel. That is the most significant difference between RAW and any other image file format.

See graphic.
Billy, There are, IMO,very few jpeg files that don’t require at least some of the minimally available opportunities to be tweaked in pp to meet minimal requirements to be adequate for display.
And the range of possible artistically creative pp for raw image data files is incredible...and the required time and supposed difficulty of raw pp is vastly overstated.
Give it a go. You won’t be disappointed.

I wholeheartedly agree. PP programs are not rocket science and, IMO, folks who refuse to use them are robbing themselves of the ability to produce much more pleasing photos. However, there are PP programs which have a steep learning curve, such as GIMP, but many are easily learned in a day or two. So, to each their own, but I will always prefer to PP RAW shots. IMO, JPG has its place and many followers who, for one reason or the other, never step up to PP in RAW.

Jpeg is a picture created in-camera (if shot in jpeg) from data the camera created when taking the picture. Raw is just the data (before it is turned/processed into a picture!

Raw also contains 3 values for each pixel.

"can someone please explain the difference between raw and jpeg"

I can see you have not done a good research on this matter. It has been discussed many but many times in this forum.
RAW is exactly that, raw information from your sensor. a JPEG image is that same RAW but now the camera's firmware has applied those parameters that were selected prior to the shot by the photographer, like contrast and sharpness. RAW images have no color information, it is assigned during editing. Same with WB.
RAW is a lossless file meaning that the data is non destructive. a JPEG suffers the more it is worked on the original and the more it is saved. RAW has 14 bits of colors, trillion of them while a JPEG has millions of colors. in 8 bits. Our eyes cannot see all of them.
There is more but it could be overwhelming for you.

Thanks for the question ... I am always unsure about asking, even after doing what research that I can ... ! And, many thanks for all the information and sites provided.

I recently started shooting in RAW + JPEG ... I have not processed any RAW files yet, I am still looking for a program. I gave up my subscription to Adobe CC (I was not using it enough) ... I now have PaintShop Pro 2018 but have not had the opportunity to work with it ... but, when I do I will have the RAW files saved to work on ...

No, no, no. This question should be banned from the UHH. It seems to be asked every 5 minutes! I never noticed in the day, did people ever ask what's the difference between a negative and a print?
