Lightroom Catalog conversion to LR Classic stuck?

I am just now converting to Lightroom Classic from Lightroom CC .... I started with one very large Catalog and after 2 hours the needle has not moved a fraction of an inch. In fact it appears that it has not moved at all in the last hour and a half.

I'm sure there may be other posts regarding this issue.... I am curious if this is common occurrence or if I may have a larger problem.

Windows 10 on a 5 year old Laptop that is otherwise pretty stable and problem free using Lightroom. My hard drive is over 90% full though...

Thanks in advance!!

Do you mean you are just upgrading to the new version of CC or that you are converting from Lightroom Mobile (now called Lightroom CC)?

And yes a 90% full hard drive does not give any programs much room for swapping etc and can slow things way down.

Yes
Just upgrading to the new LR Classic.... My delay has been the lack of hardrive space...... Which had not improved

Well aside from some routine upgrades the main change was the names. Mine went with out a hitch. But I am running 16 GB of RAM on a Core i7 with 6 cores on a desktop with three internal and one external drives. I keep my C drive (240 GB SSD) about 40% empty. All my data goes to: D drive - general data; P drive - all photos and videos. The external drive is where Acronis puts my backups.

I would say it is just going very slow. Leave it on when you go to bed and see what has happened in the morning. And you might think seriously about getting a much larger drive into your laptop and maybe keep most data etc on an external drive.

If it doesn't finish by tomorrow then you might want to back everything up. Run all the housecleaning programs etc and even delete some things. Maybe delete and reinstall to clear out conflicts and accumulated corrupt files, fragments etc. Check with Adobe support first.
I just updated my Acronis from Acronis 2015 to Acronis 2018 (turns out it works better if you go to Acronis 2016 first) and it resulted in corrupted files and nothing working right. Acronis support told me to uninstall, then do a clean install of 2018 (the tech even changed my link to the full version, not the upgrade version for this download) and then type in first my new product key and then my old key. Now everything is working fine. Two days ago it took over 8 hours to do an incremental backup and yesterday 12 1/2 to do a full. Today after the reinstall it did an incremental in less than 10 minutes.

So it could be that your old and new LR versions have conflicts and corruptions that are slowing things down.

Wow.... Ok thanks.... I did not fully understand everything you shared but I did understand be patient... And the jest of most every thing else.

After three hours the needle is showing movement now... a 1/4" with 2.75 inches to go... I'll take that with a good night's sleep and see what it's like in the morning.

Thanks again

Clear out files until you have at least 30% free. Never try to use a drive with less than that.

With a 90% full hard drive, the process is going to take forever. Let it run all night, if it still is "cooking," consider 1) expanding HD for laptop and do fresh install, or 2) keep images on an external 2 Tb drive.

Say ..... Thanks for all of these replies

rgrenaderphoto... You are absolutely correct... & in that regard, I meant to respond to Robert this morning.... My big Catalog took around 6 - 8 hours... The others have taken much less, but they are much smaller.

Gene... I have a new 8TB drive that's just coming into play.. As soon as my migration to the new LR is complete, I'll be moving my work to the 8TB unit & keep the lap top under 50% capacity.

I've got a lot to learn about high capacity storage and backups etc, but Ill formulate my questions on this later.... And research the archives too.

Thanks again

Use Lightroom to relocate existing catalog to the new HD. Consider starting after your migration to Classic, of creating a new catalog. When you want to work on your archive, close the new and open the old.

Im worried about getting ahead of myself here, but ....... One of my objectives is to reduce the number of catalogs from seven to just four. Of the four, one will be pretty large. I need to migrate work from three different catalogs into the large catalog & move folders from the large catalog into two others.

Why? I'm changing from a Yearly system to a "Subject" based system.

I have found the move process to be cumbersome and ineffective for partial moves.

Thanks

If you hard drive is 90% full forget it. Go buy a new hard drive.

LoL hey JD.... I've been moving stuff to a new 8TB drive all day...

But Im trying to get get my Catalogs in order so I can selectively move whole catalogs to the new drive too.. But my thought of the day is that I need to replace the 4TB for another 8TB.....

The other thought is that I need to consider a different storage system....

Question.... Does anyone split a large catalog between more than one external drive?

Are you aware of export as catalog? Then import as catalog? You might want to read the LR help manual or another book or video to learn how to do this. Using export to catalog you can merge as many catalogs as you want into one catalog, it includes photos and metadata.

I guess I should have asked how big the HD was. Oops. 4 TB is a lot of data. So 90% full means 400 GB still available. That is actually quite a lot. More than enough.

I do not have any experience in splitting a catalog over multiple volumes but my experience with computer software says 'that's not gonna work very well'.

The post prod studio guys out here shuffle insane amounts of data around. When setting up a studio they talk about Petayte storage, so there are systems available to handle it.

Via the lens, I'm giving this a whirl now..... I selectivity highlighted some folders to create a Catalog. This may be helpful... Thanks!
