I have an IMac 27” & Nikon D500, D810 anyone out there with A similar setup. What brand card readers do you use for XQD and Compact Flash do you use and would you by them again. Or do you use a reader at all.
Thanks in advance

The card reader in my computer stopped working a while ago. I now use a Kodak DR100 that plugs into my computer and now all is fine.
My XQD cards came with a USB reader. For the CF cards I use a standard universal card reader.
I have a Nikon D700, D800, D810 and D4s and a 27" iMac. I use Sony's XQD card reader and several Lexar USB 3.0 readers for SD and CF cards. They've been working pretty well for the last several years.
Use Lexar card reader, USB 3.0 interface with 6" tail to a head that handles about 6 different card types including SD, CF, microSD, others (not sure XQD as I have never tried it).
I used to download from the camera....now always download via the reader. Also, I take the reader AND my WDPassport portable drive when I travel.
The drive will detect the USB reader and every time I insert a memory card, it autodownloads without needing a computer. (And I can check that the download happened vis an APP on my smartphone.)
Then I plug the drive via USB into the computer and do my edits there....

To avoid unnecessary unplugging and plugging in, I use the USB cable.
I never use a card reader
I agree with "Photoflo". I use my NIKON D5, D4s and D500 with a 27" IMac too. I use Sony's XQD card reader and the Lexar USB 3.0 for my 128GB XQD cards and never had a problem.

I have the Nikon D500 And tried three readers but found the Sony SDXC2 to work the best for me. And I also have the 27 inch iMac and think the system works well together

Best one that I ever bought came from Hoodman - got it several years ago it handles both CD and Compact Flash. Cost a bit m ore but it is sure has been worth the extra cost.

I just moved from a D700 to a D810 and it took forever to upload a CF.
I found this for $16.95 on Amazon to replace my USB 1.0 reader. It's tripled my upload speeds.

I have had compact flash card problems with pins getting bent on the reader. Cameras have a longer track which keeps the card straight. Card readers usually have shorter wobblier slots. I can't remember brands but I've never paid much for one. My D850 will accept XQD cards but I haven't tried one yet. Yeah, I paid for the camera and a battery pack and 2.8 zooms but those cards seem soooo expensive.
I'm one of those old curmudgeons who prefers to download files directly from camera to computer via cable. If you search this site, you will find WAY TOO MANY examples of bent pins, etc when memory cards are inserted or taken out of readers/cameras.

0I use a Lexar. Mine is a feww years old and will not do some of the newer cards. I am sure Lexar has an updated version. I love it, it is fast and works flawlessly.
