With that dark, flat head, I'm thinking Cooper's Hawk.
Could be wrong, have been before and will be again :)

I tend to agree. The breast & back color are appropriate for an adult & eye colors are all over the page. But I may be mistaken also.

Thanks folks. Still looking but we're also thinking Cooper's Hawk with an outside shot at Sharp-Shimmed Hawk. Working with the books and laptop.

That's also a good possibility. Our nat Geo guide says the Sharp has a squared tail, too bad you can't tell because of the snow. Also says the neck is shorter than the Cooper's. Perhaps you have the same book. Regardless, thanks. I enjoy trying to ID critters so appreciate the excuse.

Thank you very much! We went through our pics again and can't see the end of the tail. We'll keep watching!

I would say a Sharp Shinned, I just photographed one in the past two weeks. They would be twins.

Thank you for your input. We never got a good look at the tail with the snow covering the end. After much research, we think we have a Coopers Hawk. The Sharp Shinned are typically smaller with a flatter head and eyes farther from the beak. One good source that seems to fit our bird is this reference, which we found last evening along with a ton of others: http://www.birdwatching-bliss.com/coopers-hawk-sharp-shinned-hawk-id.html

Thank you for commenting, but shooting through the windows of two doors left something to be desired! They are typically skittish and I didn't want to scare it.

Thank you for weighing in! Pretty sure my guy matches up with the Coopers Hawk and I'm hoping for another look!
