Hello!

I'm thinking about something and I hope someone can helps me.

I start with photography two months ago, only for hobby, I'm living in a very nice place here in Norway with beautiful landscapes and wildlife animals. For shot animals my cheap 70-300mm is not enough and since I do it for hobby I'm not willing to pay 1000$ for a 150-600mm, would a teleconverter be a good solution for me to shot those animals that I can't come close enough?

Can somebody give me some advice?
I have a Nikon D3400.

I did a fast and short search in eBay and found this one:
Very cheap

Not all lenses will accept teleconverters (TC), so research carefully. Nikon does not make a TC for that lens. Lenses that do accept them often suffer image degradation and all will lose at least a stop of light. Don't waste your money if you find one that fits. The one you saw on Ebay for $4.99 would not even be a useful paperweight.

Good luck and make the most out of what you have! I might add that no matter how long a lens we purchase, it is never long enough!

Hahaha that's probably true.

Maybe I should buy some camouflage clothes and try to come a little close to those animals.

Many recommend that, but I am too old, too fat and too lazy to work too hard!

I read some time ago a test photograping people on the top of a very hogh building from the round. I think the camera was 20mp and they used various lenses, with and without tc converters, and the conclusion was they were better not to use the converter but to crop the resulting image. The loss of resolution from cropeing was not as severe as the loss of resolution resulting from the use of another bunch of optics.

That has been my experience.

Hello! br br I'm thinking about something and I h... (show quote)

A 1.4X TC will take out about 5% image quality, and one stop of light, so at 300mm your lense will no longer open to F5.6. The best it win do is F8. I am pretty sure your camera will not autofocus at F8. Focus perfromance will also be negatively impacted. A 2x TC will cost you 2 stops of light, 30% quality loss, and no AF. Manual focusing through a lens that only opens to F11 is next to impossible with active subjects.

Unless your lens uses a dedicated TC, you'd be better off getting a longer lens, or using faster lenses (F2 -F4) if you want to use a TC.

Not sure what you wanted to show us at that Ebay link, it did not lead to a specific item. ???

If there is a matched tele-converter (1.4x, 1.7x, 2.0x) made specifically for your lens you might get fairly good results. If just a general use converter, likely not. In any case adding any glass to your shooting system will reduce resolution, contrast to some extent, and light transmission (stops) to your shots . I have several different tele-converters that mainly came with used lenses that I've purchased, I rarely use them.

If you really want to get into wildlife photography you might want to consider buying a Prime Tele-photo Lens, say a 400mm or 500mm or 600mm that might be faster and sharper than any similar Zoom lens. For landscapes you probably want a Normal or Wide Angle Prime or Zoom Lens. For a D3400 I'd suggest an approximately 11mm to 55mm range. A prime 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens would be relatively inexpensive and yet extremely fast and sharp!

Just for reference, not meant to prove or disprove anything for Nikon TC's : http://cdn-5.nikon-cdn.com/Assets/Common-Assets/Images/Teleconverter-Compatibility/EN_Comp_chart.html

Thank you so much guys. I really have got a good help in some minutes, amazing forum.

For landscape I have the 18-55 that cames with the D3400 but I will buy a wide about 10-20mm or 12-24mm, but I'm checking at used marketing, maybe I don't need a brand new right now.

So, yes I will start to safe some money to buy a 600mm. Now I have to decide about which one but I have time to research, I have to save money the next 6 month for that or my wife will kill me "again" hahaha

I checked now, fast just to see the prices and I found that:
