I bought two SD>CF adaptors, one for type I and and one for type II. These were for "just in case". In the family we have 8 cameras that will take SD and only two that will take CF so we have a LOT of SD cards. Unless the price is really good or they have a significant speed difference in future I will probably buy only SD cards. I am buying one 64 GB CF for my main #1 card in my 5DIV.

I just bought a 5d mrk iv to upgrade from my 5d mrk ii. The batts from the 5d mrkii do not work on the mrk iv so my question is what after market battery can I buy that is compatible with the mrk iv. Also what cf card aand sd card is everyone useing. Going to be useing it mainly for photography but want to start useing the video clips along with photos to compliment the photos.

The LP-E6 batteries from your 5DII will work fine in 5DIV. The latter comes with an LP-E6N that's got slightly higher capacity, but otherwise is the same. LP-E6 andLP-E6N are completely interchangeable (I use both in my 5DII, 7D and 7DII... I'm only careful to make sure I use them in pairs, since I use dual battery grips on all my cameras.... LP-E6 with LP-E6, or LP-E6N with LP-E6N. Not sure this is necessary, though.)

I really don't know about 3rd party "clones" of the LP (lithium) series Canon batteries. I have only used OEM batteries in my cameras that have used them.

I DID use a bunch of cheaper 3rd party batteries in older models that used the BP511/512 (NiCad)... but those were just plain batteries, didn't have the "chip" that the newer LP-series use to communicate more fully with the camera. Those worked fine... were at least equal and in some cases seemed better than OEM.

But after Canon switched to the LP-series lithium, I recall that the early 3rd party LP-E6 clones sucked.... And that's why I bought OEM at the time (though they were much more expensive and hard to find initially). Back then... when the 5DII was relatively new (it was the first model to use LP-series batteries, I think)... the 3rd party manufacturers were simply adapting NiCads to fit, you couldn't use the Canon charger with them, plus the 3rd party NiCads didn't have the circuitry to communicate properly with the camera. But that was years ago and I imagine since then the manufacturers switched over to Lithium completely and have worked out most of or all the kinks. Today I don't think it would be a problem to use the cheaper 3rd party LP-E6N equivalents... but I don't know this from experience.

If you plan to shoot 4k video on the 5D4, you MUST have a CF card that is rated 100MB per second or faster. The 5D4 uses about 1MB for each second of 4k video, so I would recommend a 256GB card, or the largest one you can afford.

I also had the 5D mkII and IV. I use LEXAR 128 CF and SD. The SD cards hit the buffer much quicker on the IV so I shoot to CF and backup on SD. I have found Watson batteries are good when new but don’t stay new long. The Canon last a long time and keep working like new longer. In the end the 5D IV is a power hog. If it for pro use I would get the BG-E20 grip and 4 canon 6N batteries for best value.

Batteries from the Mk II will most definitely work in the newer Mk IV, but they will not like doing so. They might send you error messages or run out of power sooner than expected, but they do work. If you stop to think about this you will realize the Mk IV is a power hog compared to the Mk II. The AF system utilizes it's own computer which uses power. The touch screen on the Mk IV uses lots of power. The Mk II is a power miser by comparisons. Most of the adjustments made on the rear LCD of the Mk IV are done on the top LCD of the Mk II, a feature that uses far less power. Try this, open the manual for the Mk IV and start reading the nomenclature section. Look at every button and ask yourself if the system using that button is using power and how much. You will quickly realize how efficient the Mk II is. I carry a Mk II in my car. I looked at the battery charge this morning and found it to be full, and it's been that way since Thanksgiving. My Mk IV goes through 2 batteries a day just shooting birds out the window. That body with large lens eats batteries whole. I am just greatful that I am able to use the Mk II batteries at all in the Mk IV. They can still be used for back up. The card situation in the Mk IV is sort of funky, to me. I dislike SD cards and got one 64gb card for it. I use this card solely for backing up the RAW files on the CF card. It never comes out of it's slot. Best of luck to you and the new Mk IV, it is one great experience. Wait until you see it work at ISO 12,8000!
Batteries from the Mk II will most definitely work... (show quote)

Do you leave your Mk IV GPS on all the time?

Very true. The 4K video on the mark IV uses a LOT of space on the memory card. But since you don't need to buy a new battery you can get a fast 256GB card.

I will get the 128gb instead. I will eventually start using the video mode.
