I am debating between these 2 lens. I believe the 18-400 is the newer of the 2. Does anyone have experience withe either your generous help is always appreciated. I primarily shoot with the Nikons 7200 and 750. I am thinking of either of these for travel. I have the Tamron 18-270 Pzd which I like but I would sell and replace with either of these
Thanks in advance

Howdy Papa. When the 16-300 was initially released I purchased it to use on a crop sensor Canon and was quite disappointed on the overall IQ. I subsequently returned it, and if it were me I would try the later version 18-400. I'm not sure if I merely got a bad copy of the 16-300, but it was a disappointment for me because I do hear some good things with the older version. I finally ended up with the Sigma 18-300

Good luck, and make sure where ever you purchase the lens the vendor has a good return policy.
I only use lenses made by Nikon for my Nikon cameras so that tells you I do not use nor I anticipate to use those lenses in the future. Do I have any experience with them? Yes, but only with the 18-400.
When Tamron came to town this past December they had the lens for those photographers present to test it. I did not test it but I saw many of the images made and they looked very good in quality. Consider that there is a variation in quality from lens to lens and consider the large focal lengths span of this zoom. Compromises have to be made to reach the convenience of such lenses regardless of manufacturer. Using the lens with your D750 will vignette at many focal lengths since the lens is a DX.
What about the Nikon 28-300? Although it is not very good as a wide angle lens for your D7200 at the long end it will be a decent lens for some wildlife and sports shots in good light. Understand that it is more of a walk around lens than a sport or wildlife lens.
William thank you for your thoughts I have 2 Tamron lens 18-270 and the 24-70 and many Nikon lens I appreciate the Nikon value I have 2 Nikon 70-300 Vrs and love them but for travel the wider angle a few the long focal length are attractive and since my retirement I am a little more frugal. Your points are well taken thank you

I'm considering buying the 18-400 as well. With the various reviews I've read, and that I have an older model (D5100), I've decided to rent one for a week and give it a try. Still trying to determine when to rent, so I have the time to try multiple locations and shot types.
Nikon apparently is attempting to stop their base from using third party lenses. That may be why they will remain #2 in camera sales.
I have the 16-300 for Canon which I bought when I first bought my 70d. Honestly,it has been a great lens for me and I love the versatility for traveling. I wish it was a little faster and yes, it could have a little better IQ but in general I have taken some great photos with this lens and it remains in my arsenal even after I have upgraded.

How would Nikon (or anyone, other than "she who must be obeyed") stop
you from using anything?😈😈😈

Neither, if you want sharp images, buy the Nikon 200-500 f 5.6. This lens is not only faster than the other two it is built to better tolerances than the other two. I have used this lens for over two years and is as tight now as it was when I bought it. And the body finish is better too. Did I mention your images will be sharper, yea, that too.
I have the 18-400 and it works good but is sometimes slow to focus. But it takes good photos. Never owned the 16-300 so can't compare them for you.
Hi there, I just got the 18 to 400 Tamron, and very happy with it. Just have to get used to the extra weight, and the clockwise twist. Also a little stiff to turn at the 100 mark. But I am very happy overall and saves changing lenses.
Good luck
I have owned the 16-300 and have it mounted on my Canon 70D. it is an excellent lens and I took it to Italy last year, the photo's were awesome, I like the wide end of 16mm.

I used the Nikkor 18-140 for a couple of years, now have the 18-400. As I travel a lot, I find it very convenient to get long shots I could not with the 18-140 and have not noticed the extra weight at all. I carry it with a wrist strap. Having the two extremes, I don't have to worry about carrying another lens with me.
I have the 18-400 lens and am very happy with it. Us it on my Canon 80D....Rich
