I lost my 18-55 kit lens and want to replace it but don't have a ton of money. I noticed on KEH that they have a Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM for $313 - would this be a better replacement or does someone else have a suggestion? I use my nifty fifty most of the time but there are times I have wanted to go a little wider and it would be handy.

Why not check eBay?
eBay won't tell him which is the better lens.

When you’re right, you’re right! My response wasn’t much help at all. I was trying to suggest, unsucessfully I might add, to check eBay to find a lower price on whatever lens he decided to purchase.

Sorry - Nikon D5500
The fifty's not so nifty on a crop sensor camera.
Check ebay; whichever costs more is better.

Thom Hogan has an excellent, if somewhat dated, review of the lens:
http://www.bythom.com/Sigma17-50mm_lens_review.htmAlthough the title does not reference the DC and HSM features, they are covered in the article. You didn't mention KEH's rating of the lens, but if it is EX or above, it sounds like a good buy. KEH tends to under-rate their products; the EX+ lenses I've bought from them were in outstanding condition.

B&H has a refurb 18-55 VR for $109... i would not hesitate to buy refurb from them. If you liked your 18-55, why not get another to replace it?

More accurately, the nifty is not ao "fifty" on a crop sensor camera...lol
(Techy nerd joke)
Thanks to you all - I'm pretty good at finding deals but I was wondering, as a replacement, is the 17-50 a nice step up? I am improving day by day so feel if it is worth it, I wouldn't mind paying a little more. (A $500+ lens is out of the question right now)

I'd vote yes if only for the lens speed improvement, haven't used the 17-50 but I have no complaints on the Sigma 17-70, Bob.
If your original 18-55 is the kit lens, then the Sigma 16-50mm, F-2.8 would be a significant improvement. However, you should be able to replace the original kit lens in the used market for $50.00 or less if cost is a big factor. Frankly the faster, 2.8 lens should be well worth the money. You would gain a bit on the wide angle end, but will also lose a bit on the maximum zoom, however, the gain light gathering capabilities with the 2.8 f-stop makes it well worth the jump in price. Good luck and good shooting to all.
I would go with the Sigma just to get to f2.8. I had a Canon kit 18-55 that I just gave to a fellow student when she broke hers. It was used and when I looked at the used market for that class of lens, it was only worth about 50.00 to 60.00.
