While I subscribe to the idea that “it ends when it’s done”; and “it will be as large as it has to be”, I wonder what is the most time you have spent processing “art” and how large was the final file.

About 15 to 20 layers deep in Adobe as a .PSD file. Not much more to the file size than when you start with it. Most files are anywhere from 11 to 35 Mbytes just depends on what I start with and how it is cropped. I always work my pics as the size I regularly print it at. Print size is usually 11x14 inches. To place on the net I reset the image size in Adobe and make a new jpeg at a resolution of 50 pixels per inch and then post it if I post it.

Depends on original file size and what you are doing with which program.

I use PS CC and routinely end up with 'heavy files', over 250MB.

When I create or edit a panorama the largest - so far - has been 2.1 GB.

As to time passed on each file? Very little to be honest between 10 to 20 minutes. Now it can take PS CC up to a few hours to create the output I want... By then I am in bed or doing other things more important like watching the grass grow while waiting for a tree rat to shoot.

Photoshop is (frustratingly) limited to a longest side of 30,000 pixels, so I've had a few at that. As for time spent? I'm still processing ones I shoot 6 years ago. It's done when I say it's done.

The overwhelming majority of my images take under 5 minutes to pp. When occasionally I have something really special I want to get perfect, or want a very specific look, I might take 15 or 20 minutes to get the shot where I want to be. And on a few occasions I've even spent a half an hour or more, but those are very rare and very unusual circumstances. I've been using DXO Photolab for the last few months and find it's much faster and gives me a much more finished product then I was able to accomplish in Lightroom. Since all my processing is to the original raw files except for very rare occasions, the file size is the same size from beginning to end. When complete processing I may generate a jpeg what are generally 15-20 mb in size. I do not generate PSD files or tiff files.

I spent 3 days getting an image to the point where I was satisfied with the results. Lost track of how many times I started and stopped, rejected the results and started over again.

Err... You are using the wrong export then.
There is no limit in size other than the selected file format.
Instead of using 'Export' use 'Save As' and select the file type with options.

Since I like to verify... I just produced a 45747x1953 pixels PNG.

Actually I spend less time doing my art compared to what I do for my clients. I will spend upwards of 90 mins doing a fshion retouch on a single face, using dozens of layers. Images can be a gb or more. I might spend 20 mins on a personal single "art" image. A pan or composite can have a lot of layers as well. The biggest pano was almost 600 mp and was over 2 gb in size.

I can't say how long precisely, probably many hours or how many layers or tools used, I really don't think about it. Restorations can take a long time, more than original "art". I often end up with 80MB PSD files. I usually work with 10x15" 16-bit files at 300ppi. I've made stitched panoramas and stacks that were well over 1.2GB!

50 layers? Can't imagine how long that one took you. I hope you are properly paid.

Never have added layers to my photos. Now my waistline that’s a different story
