For a number of years, along with suggestions from my Art History/Photographer friend, I found and kept this link to about 24 photo compositional sites in my archive of help tips. I still refer to it often:

The Rule of Thirds in photography functions as a principle for attaining visual balance in an image.

By convention, this ancient principle has taken on a name using the word "rule." In turn, this word suggests a necessity that induces in some individuals a kneejerk reaction against the supposed rule.

Experienced photographers will know of course that an inherently interesting subject will attract and keep the attention of the audience, and will do so regardless of this subject fitting itself to the Rule of Thirds.

This insight leads to one of the foremost guides in photography: First find an interesting subject.

Then if composed, framed, and exposed for the most flattering treatment, the photograph will do justice to its subject. The Rule of Thirds may or may not serve this end.

Overall, a complex of variables comes into play when doing photography.

This fact tells us why learning the craft of photography takes years to become conversant with its principles, concepts, rules, guides, and techniques.

In time, in the right hands, the working of this craft may rise to art.

Rule of thirds in my mind is a suggestion. It is not a hard and fast rule.

Yeah!! But it sounds really weird to say, "Suggestions about Thirds". Sounds like your talking about how many slices in a pizza, which reminds me.

Fellow orders a Pizza at the parlor. Guy taking the order asks him if he want's it in 8 or 16 pieces. Fellow thinks and the light goes on. "Oh 8 pieces, I don't think I can eat 16."

Buried way down this link is an ad for a "I'm Back" which is a digital back for some old 35 mm film cameras. Anyone else notice it.

So he just wants to replace the "rule of thirds" with some other just as cockamamie rule? What about the rule of "what looks right"?

I don't pay any attention to those anymore. I'm not interested in vaporware.
