Upgrading from the original Sony RX-10 Model 1 to new version 3 or 4

I'm the proud owner and user of Sony's original RX-10 model 1, introduced way back in 2013. It's gotten a bit "old in the tooth" (smaller zoom range), non-4K video, etc. , but has previously consistently delivered quite a range of excellent imagery, and it was relatively easy to lug around. I have been considering if Sony's latest generation RX-10 Model 4 (or even the slightly older Model 3) would be a significant enough of an improvement for me to seriously consider an upgrade. I've seen messages from current owners of the RX-10 Model 4 and the fact that they were very satisfied by the latest model 4. But I was curious what convinced them, especially if they had used a previous model, that the new RX-10 Model 4 (or even the slightly older Model 3) warranted an upgrade. I do like the idea of an "integrated" all-in-one camera body/capable zoom lens. Provided the image quality is top notch. Thanks HH'ers for your response.

I have the RX10 iv and the a6500. On the a6500 I have used the 100-400 GM, the 70-200 G f4 and the surprisingly good Minolta 500/8 mirror lens. There is no question in my mind about comparing the image quality between these two cameras.

The larger sensor is better at all ISO's but the advantage grows as the ISO goes up and for really good IQ the limit on the RX10 is about ISO 800.

However, you have to answer for yourself how good is good enough. Here is an image I took this year with the rX10 iv. Some owners have better shots. But this is a real world example of what you can expect with no great skill or effort. It was shot out the window of the car, hand held, at Apopka in FL. I like it.

I also have the original RX-10. I had a Nex-7 also, and upgraded that to an A7ii. I am still new to the A7ii, and have not finished buying lenses for it. The difference for me is the dynamic range of the larger sensor. I paint with oils images that I get from my cameras while on vacation, etc. I need to be able to visualize the range of values and hues so that I can try to re-create them. There is a visual difference I notice from the sensor size. However, it is much easier to get a great photo with the RX-10, simply because of the quality Zeiss lens attached and mated to the sensor. Therefore, if you are simply looking for sharp and pleasing photos, then the RX-10iii or iiii would work best for you. Also, your age and travel expectations are a part of the equation. Good luck with your decision.

I have seen a few Sony Artisans of Imagery use the RX10 cameras as a backup and sometimes it is their go to camera for certain situations.

Thanks ChapJohn. The fact that Sony Artisans use the RX-10 as a good backup camera tells me volumes about the quality and trust they put into Sony's integrated all-in-one solution, as opposed to separate lens alpha cameras. I think the definitive word in deciding on whether to upgrade my Sony RX-10 original to a newer generation, is the new features, etc- like 4K video, better zoom, etc. There's no question I enjoy the integrated, but high performance zoom lens on the RX-10. Anyone out there ready to trade up their RX-10 current generation to an Alpha Model. I might be interested.
