Someone here recommended this kit. I got one, and it works great. This cheap bunch of wiring lets you connect an old internal hard drive to your new computer via a USB cable.

Here is what I got to connect old internal hard drives that I removed from my old computers. There are some from China and some from the U. S. I got my U. S. package within a week for $7.99. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_8?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sata+kit&sprefix=sata+kit%2Caps%2C177

Depending on what drive you have, there are at least two ways to make the connection. No directions came with the kit, but it's a no-brainer, so I had no trouble at all. :D

You connect the cables that fit into the drive. If a cable doesn't fit, you don't use it. After connecting to the hard drive, you will have two cables to plug in - USB and power. Plug each into the appropriate spot, and you have another drive. I've formatted four drives this way.

My drives are from two to eight years old, so they are just backups for my backups.

Thanks for the info! I just ordered one. I have a 750 Gb HD I'm not using and was looking for another ext. HD. This looks like a cheap way to get one! I can do cheap!

here's the device i use for external sata drives. i have one like yours for old ide drives and it hooks to the newer sata drives.

this unit is great..you can hot swap drives. i have about 50 external sata drives and use 3 of these. no muss...no fuss. i bought mine at tiger direct. these only work on sata drives, not ide drives.

I just splurged on that $7.99 wiring kit, so it would be hard to justify getting the stand that you have. :D
