For years I have uploaded my images directly from my card to either Lightroom or Photoshop. I was just told I should up load the images onto my hard drive and then import the images into the processing program.
What is the difference and what does it matter??

Depends on where you want the final results to end up. If the edited copy and the original are both going to wind up back on the card then I would just leave everything on the card assuming that you have room for all the PPed files too.

It shouldn't matter, in the end when you save the finished product it is on your hard drive.
