Has anyone used extension tubes on a 105mm micro Nikkor lens and if so what results favourable or not.
Thanks.
I use a set of auto-extension tubes with my Nikkor 105G macro lens. With 68-mm extension I can acquire 2:1 magnification (2x life-size) on my APS-C sensor.
Below: Very young & older, immature aphids, with recently discarded exoskeleton skins. 2:1 magnification (2x life-size). Download and enlarge to see detail of 1-mm long aphids on left side.
Nikon D5000 at ISO 400, Nikkor 105D macro lens + 68-mm auto-extension tubes, 1/200-sec at f/122, Nikon SB-600 speedlight with O-Flash 3/4-circle Fresnel prism attachment.
Very young & older, immature aphids, with recently discarded exoskeleton skins.
Thanks for the info and of course the fab picture your combination is just what I am looking for. I asked the question because I had read somewhere that extensions couldn't be used with the 105mm, now seeing your picture that has proven incorrect reading.
Once again thank you for your time and advice.

Hope you don't mind me picking your brain again but whose auto extension tubes did you use?
thanks
Nikon doesn't make auto tubes...A lot of people swear by Kenko tubes which have the contacts to transmit info to the camera. A 3rd party maker ,Zeikos, offers some as well, but I'm not sure of the build quality of these newer tubes as I use older tubes from film days on the rare occasions that I do use them
Polaroid also do a very good set - cheaper that Kenko, whilst still maintaining the Auto Functions

Vivitar makes auto extension tubes for Nikon and they're metal - got very good reviews on Amazon and only $90 for the set. I'm interested in getting an auto set and would also like recommendations from those who use them.
Chances are the Zeikos, Vivitar & other 3rd party ones are made by the same outfit & simply re-badged with whomever"s brand name. It's a common practice in industry...Unless you have a base or prosumer model Nikon, (anything under a D200), you don't need the contacts for metering as the cameras will meter just fine in M or A. That said, you don't need AF either as it becomes useless when shooting at true macro ratios

You need the contacts to operate the aperature of a "G" lens (or any lens for that matter)

Great picture, but EEWWW...infestation!
I use the manual ext tubes, which cost about $10. When using them I prefer to set things manually anyway. I didn't want to take a chance spending $100 and then find out that I didn't like the results. For $10 I could take a chance.
I'll have to try them on my 105mm.
