UHH in a Big Room

Imagine if we all had to go into a large room together to access UHH. Instead of computers, we would use our voices to exchange ideas. Would there be as many insults and arguments? I can't quite imagine a couple of 80-year-olds getting up and struggling across the room to duke it out. Firearms would have to be checked at the door.

Good question, Jerry. Personally I don’t think you would even hear some of the subjects brought up here on this forum. I believe folks are less likely to get argumentive when face to face with other people.

Mass communication has a potential for a lot of sharing and caring, but in practice it is having opposite effect. I guess we are not bringing our hearts and souls into it.

Jerry, I've pretty much made it a policy that I don't treat people any differently online as I would in person.

That would all depend on whether it was video recorded on a cropped or full frame sensor.

Many people will say things hiding behind their computer, but they will not say in person. Most likely they would not even attend a gathering in a large room. The majority of the attendees would show the person the way to the door.

The "mob rule" system that stifles real conversation. Many "big room" gatherings have devolved into special interest small rooms gatherings just to keep meetings viable and meaningful.

As for the 80 yo, they will have to leave their teeth at the door along with their guns.

Actually it would be a lot more civil as the trolls wouldn't have the cojones to actually appear in public where their internet anonymity couldn't protect them.

Consider the similarity between people's behavior in on-line chat groups and when driving a car. Pedestrians on a busy sidewalk are invariably more polite to each other than drivers on a busy highway. Jerry's proposal is a good one: imagine being face-to-face with the person who wrote that nonsensical comment (or with the driver of the car that just cut you off). Of course, there are a few folks who can't resist the cutting insult even when talking to you directly. But these people don't subscribe to UHH. Do they?

Did you ever notice that the most complicated presentations seem to have the shortest Q&A sessions. A lot of people are reluctant to ask what they are afraid might be a dumb question in public. No such hesitation here on UHH.

I speak from personal experience.

In this group, cameras with long lenses are the guns. The time has come to organize annual meetings like those of so many organizations. Ours will need a huge screen and the best projection equipment to showcase the best photographs and topics that can generate lively discussions.

People will post and or email things they would never say to your face due to the confrontation that would occur and the likely hood of fisticuffs.

I think most of them are keyboard commandos.
