Greetings!

I have one week left to decide so I'll ask my UH friends. I bought a 21" imac to replace a mac laptop. For and additional $300, I can exchange it for the 27" version. The differences are: larger, 5K screen and the ability to add RAM later. This can not be done on the 21" (thanks Apple!).

The larger screen is secondary to me. I am close to the screen and my second monitor is a 27". So, do I switch in order to future proof? Right now, I can open On1, photoshop, Lightroom, a browser with several tabs, and it runs fine. I have a D810 so the files are pretty big. I imagine there's a D850 a few years in the future when the prices come down.

Definitely go for the 27". I have both sizes, and that extra screen size is a big plus. Regardless how close you're sitting, that large screen is very nice. Adding memory is also a big plus, but it's not like you're going to be adding it every week. Apple memory is very expensive, so buying the standard 27" and then adding your own memory will save you a lot of money. I bet that will be a one-time thing, though. 16Gb should be sufficient for just about anything.

I just bought the 27 inch and it makes a big difference, especially as the aging eyes get weaker. Go for it!

I have a 27" and love it. I can see my images almost full size to the prints I make. It makes working on images a lot better.

The 21 inch iMac can be bought with 16 gig memory. If that's enough for you, then ok. But you canNOT buy an off-the-shelf 21 (at 8 gig) and add later, either Apple memory or 3rd party. If you want 16 gig on the 21 iMac you need to huy it that way from Apple.
