I've been looking on- line and have not been able to locate a lens case that will accomodate my 500MM Vivitar lens which is about 19 inches long. Any, and all, suggestions would be appreciated as the original has disintegrated over the past 45 years.

Here’s a listing of 460 cases. You might find your size:

Harbor Freight sells metal cases with customizable foam interiors. I transport my Sigma 150-600 Sport and Contemporary in one of those cases as will as my Canon EF 100-400L II, Nikkor 200-500 and most of my Canon EF and Nikkor F mount lenses. I also use the Harbor Freight cases to transport several camera bodies. The cases come in black or silver, the corners are reinforced and you can lock them. They are not water tight but they keep dust out and they are relatively inexpensive. I wouldn't ship my gear I those cases, but for loading in the car, transporting and storage, they are great.

DIY might be the solution.

I love the Tenba bags. I have the 15" Messenger. Very well designed and sturdy. I recommend.

Just keep looking (you probably did just one quick search), as there are latterly hundreds of bags/cases that fit a lens like that comfortably!

I think your approach depends on why you need the protection. Airline travel in the cabin? Airport travel with the baggage? Hiking? Transporting in the car between shoots? What I typically do with my Sigma 150-500 "Bigma" is to carry it in a photo backpack. I use a Thinktank Airport Essentials for that.

I carry my Canon 500mm f/4 lens in a Think Tank "Glass Taxi." It's been to Costa Rica 11 times and Alaska 12. It's terrific and well made.

I use the Lens Trekker 600 AW III backpack for traveling. May be a bit bulky for your requirements but another well-made product to consider. I used it for my similarly sized Minolta 600mm (12+ lbs and 18" long).

Well, it isn't the resolution I had hoped for but I'm willing to consider it. What are you thinking about from a price standpoint?
