I have recently had a GAS attack and am now the carer for a Nikon D850 a heavy weighty 70-200 2.8E lens and a loan . I like to carry using a Billingham bag with the camera lens and lens hood attached. This puts the overall length of the camera and lens at about 15-17 inches , with a 1.4 converter involved. The camera is about 7inches wide with strap etc.

My ideal would be a camera bag that was long enough to carry this but not over wide . So a long slim bag that will take the width of the stuff.

Any suggestions ? I have a large Billingham that will carry the camera but it is so so wide, not suitable for carrying round museums and town etc. Got a smaller Billingham but not really long enough. Help?????

Thankfully my GAS attack has subsided but now its the law of unintended consequences.

I had this problem ! I have a canon 50D with a 400mm F5.6L, carried all the time fitted up; I found that a tamrac bag fitted perfectly. Approx 7.5 inches wide

Take a look at the Ona Brixton.

Well made with an interior that can be modified as needed.

Years ago a friend of mine used to have custom leather bags, cases made for his various camera set ups. It was a shop in NYC, but I don't recall what their main business was supposed to be.

Are there any shops around today that will fit a bag to a photographer's specific needs.

Lowepro makes just such a sling bag - just right for a large DSLR (with grip) and a 70-200 f2.8 (and an extender if you like) plus an outside and inside pocket for filters, cards, etc. I find that although I have a number of larger bags that hold multiple lenses, this has become my “go-to” bag - just sling it over my shoulder. The model number is a 55AW2 and not expensive - I paid $37 on Amazon

That is a nice bag. Too top shelf for me, I'd worry about scratching the leather.

Look at Thinktankphoto's Streetwalker line:

I have this one: https://www.thinktankphoto.com/collections/retrospective-series/products/retrospective-20

It's designed for FF DSLR with 70-200mm attached. Very rugged yet probably more compact than big Billingham. It easily fit my 5D3 with grip and 70-200.

Have you looked at the Tenbas? I have the 15" messenger. So well designed. Designed by camera people. Tough, as well.

Take a look:

Congrats on your new camera and lens! A wee bit jealous but I am pretty happy with my D810 and D500. My favorite backpack for single carry with lens attached is my Lowepro Flipside 300. It's narrow and will carry D500 with my 200-500 attached. There is room for another body too and my teles or a shorter lens. Good luck!

Try a "movie camera bag". I had a couple of camera bags and nothing ever fit just the way i wanted. Then i stumbled on a used movie camera bag....its long, not too wide with great external pockets and fairly easy carry. Holds my stuff nicely. Just a thought.

I like the older Tenba bags you can get off ebay. Many of these models would fit your needs

This is an old Lowepro bag which still could be available on eBay.
