I am considering purchasing a used lens from B & H. I am curious to see what the hoggers think about the difference between the 9 and ten rated lens. Is a ten rating worth the few extra dollars than a 9 rating? I know B & H is a very reputable source. I wouldn't consider anything less than a 9 rating. Thanks for your input.

It depends upon the difference and price. B&H is very good.If you are not happy with the 9 purchase, you can return it.

9 is an excellent rating to begin with so any difference it almost certainly cosmetic. A small scratch, perhaps. Knowing B&H, I wouldn't hesitate to buy either one. It would all depend on whether I wanted to spend the extra money.

Wouldn't you having a 10 for a few years and actively using it make it a 9???
Probably aesthetic looks from the outside. More vs. less pristine.
I think I wouldn't worry about the difference.

I bought an 85mm f/1.8 AF-D lens from B&H that was rated 9 and it could have passed for new.

As long as there's nothing funky going on inside the lens and everything is secure and working properly and it's a fair price, does it really matter what number they put on it!?

I would also compare the cost of a refurbished lens to the cost of used. Cameta is good for that also.

Define "a few dollars." If the 10 isn't a stretch, buy it. If B&H thinks it's better, it's probably better, although that could mean it has two scratches on the barrel, rather than three.

I have bought used lenses from B&H. One rated 10, one rated 9 and one rated 8+. I could see no difference in any of them except the lowest raged one had glue from a sticker that had been on the lens cap.

For just a "few" extra dollars I would go with the 10. That said though, I find frequently that the 9 or other lens close in price includes caps and at times other accessories the 10 does not have. Then I would go with the 9 as the glass at that rating still is perfect and it is blemishes on the barrel perhaps.

I have purchase all the used lenses from B and H. They were all 9. When I got them they looked brand new.

I too, have purchased used lenses and a camera body or two from B&H and have been happy with all of them. I would have no problem with a 9. If you do have a concern, call them. Customer service is very helpful and they will describe the lens to you and let you know what makes it what it is. Best of Luck

For some folks who do ratings think that if the lens does not walk on water, they do not like it. I personally throw out the high and low scores and read the ones in the middle. Some folks would not be happy if they could walk on water.
Ratings are on thing, your personal preferences are quite another. One man's ceiling in another man's floor.
What really counts is this, WHAT DO YOU THINK? And the only way to know is to use it. If you don't like it, return it.

I agree, I also trust Adorama and KEH.
