I used to live in Waipahu for about a year and a half when I was stationed at Hickam AFB in the 1960s. The nice thing about the apartment we lived in was it was new and we were the first tenants and it didn't have enough time to become invested with cockroaches yet, unlike the WWII era apartment we lived in in Honolulu. I recently viewed satellite photos of the Waipahu area and see that it has grown exponentially also. But it is close to the freeway which wasn't there back then.

My monopod is a cheapo thing I got at Walmart for $15. I put a cheapo tilt head on it that came off a tripod I was discarding. I have had it for several years and it works well for me.

I lived in Waipahu on Henokea Street from early ‘62 to early ‘64, then moved to Hickam Village the last year in Hawaii. I understand HV was demolished years ago, and the cane fields surrounding Henokea likely changed dramatically also. I was born to live in Hawaii!!! Loved it.

Bill,
How high is the viewfinder of your camera after it is mounted on the ever important head and QR place and device. And how high is your eye, and how much bend is left in your knees? I suspect you'll be all right.

Last week I bought a Vanguard VEO AM-264TR Monopod with 3 legs stabilizer. It cost $69 at my “local” camera shop. It feels solid, and not at all cheaply made. So far I am very happy with it. It was purchased specifically for our upcoming trip to Africa and Scotland.

I already own a Vanguard tripod that has served me very well for the last 3 years, so I’m expecting the same from the new monopod.

Sounds like the one I bought recently. Not sure of model number as it is in the car and I'm at Starbucks. Haven't tried it yet.

The monopod is rated at 30lbs which should be more than sufficient. Here’s an inexpensive monopod tilt head that appears to be a knock-off of the Manfrotto tilt head (I have and like very much).

Great link! I bought from them just now. Thank you very much.

Looks good but they didn't provide its weight capacity.

It should be ok, but I would not use it with all the legs fully extended. You will find that most monopods will flex if the leg sections are fully extended. As a rule, if you extend each leg section so that 1" to 3" are not deployed, the monopod will not flex and it will provide a firm support for even a heavier camera than the manufacturer specified. So, applying that information, I would consider the Opteka to realistically be a 65" monopod.
Good advice. At 65" plus a tilt head plus the few inches up to the viewfinder on my DSLR, it should be okay, I figure.

A stick with the right size screw in the end will do the job quite well and double as a walking stick. I bought a cheap monopod for supporting the weight of a rifle or shotgun. I removed the V shaped holder on the end and voila! a $20 monopod for my camera.

I have 3 or 4 monopods including one I bought about 50 years ago. They all work good. I DO NOT LIKE using a ball head on a monopod under any conditions. And I have fitted them with eBay pan heads instead. Cheap pan heads are fine. All I want is to adjust the up/down angle to match what I am shooting along with what angle the monopod is at while shooting. What I look for are ways to brace the monopod with some immovable object which means that the monopod may be at quite an angle. I may use my foot to anchor the base. I never try to stand upright and hold the monopod vertical in front of me. Its just not stable that way. I need some additional support. And with that additional support, it is almost as stable as using a tripod. But you have to be creative.

The term amateur or professional has little to nothing to do with ones financial condition or what one chooses to spend their money on. Some have more and some have less and some decide to spend it differently on different priorities. I prefer to drive an older car and spend money on other things I value more including photography.

If you really want to go low budget for a monopod I would suggest a nice straight sapling from the forest or a broomstick with a hanger bolt screwed and glued into the end. You can choose 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 thread size. I would go 1/4-20 and you can add a bushing to get to the 3/8-16 for a couple dollars. Makes a nice walking stick too... But doesn't collapse well for travel packing.

Best,

I have made a monopod from one of these adjustable extenstion poles. They come in a variety of lengths and have a quick adjust button to go up or down. I modified the top to be able to add a pan head. Works well and is strong.

2-4 feet:

4-8 feet:

Also bought one of these on eBay, then removed the little feet on the bottom (no need for them). And it comes with a fluid pan head. I like it a lot.

Looks perfect for a monopod. I wouldn't be too concerned with weight. It is always in a locked condition when you are using it.

The outer islands are lovely... Kauai, Maui, & big island of Hawaii. Oahu is being paved over & has traffic jams AM & PM.

For a couple of dollars, they sent this from Canada to Hawaii via UPS! I really like this head.. quality construction and smooth operation. Much thanks for the tip.

I have a cheap monopod from Walmart that I use all the time for sports. It holds a 5d Mk4 and 70-200 f2.8 lens just fine and for my purposes it works just fine. My Benro carbon fiber also converts to a mono, but I have never used it that way.
