Where to position the monopod?

I have a Sigma 70-200 with a Sigma 2x attached, mounted on a Canon 7dmii. Question is where do I attach the monopod/tripod too, the lens mount or camera mount? Usually I attach to the lens mount when it's just the lens and camera but with the added length of the 2x, I'm concerned where to properly mount the unit. Is there a single equalizer plate that attaches to both lens and camera mount then has a mount that will attach to the monopod/tripod? Or am I overly concerned about the camera/lens connections. The strength in my arms are fading making hand holding tiring so I need the assistance of my monopod with these longer lenes.

Attach the Monopod to your Sigm lens mount.

I would prefer to attach to the lens mount with a tilt head. Three plus pounds!

Absolutely the lens mount. The weight of the camera body and the 70-200 puts way too much weight on the camera body flange if you attach the support there.

Yes. An Arca Swiss compatible tilt head, and an Arca plate long enough to achieve balance.

There are mount systems that attach to the camera body with a lens support, and a long Arca plate that allows balanced positioning. But you would only need that if your lens did not have a tripod foot.

I gave up on multiple mounting systems a while back and converted everything to arca-swiss. I had two different quick release systems and buying a Wimbereley made three, so that did it! As painful as it was, it has proven to be a good move for me. Love the L-plates and moving from tripod strap to tilt-mono to ball head and gimbal in a matter of seconds ! Yes, arca-swiss release on my camera shoulder strap. RRS loves me.

I also converted everything to Acra-Swiss. I use a Wimbereley plate under each lens foot, longer lenses get longer plates for getting the correct balance. Each camera has its own L plate, mostly RRS (costly but they are great) Which permits moving from tripod in landscape or portrait to a tilt-mono to ball head and gimbal in seconds. It’s a unified system.

I have an RRS lever release clamp on my tripod that allows me to go from gimbal to ball head or ready for storage in seconds.

You can use a RRS Long Lens Support and some of their clamping elements to attach both the camera body and lens to the rail. It is not necessary for what you are doing in my opinion and the setup would cost a few hundred dollars. Just use a plate on the lens collar. I would also recommend a tilt head for the monopod, but it is optional too. I have always wondered if a 3 pound camera hanging off the back of a 3 pound 70-200 made much difference other than perhaps leverage. I use a lens collar whenever possible, but also handhold such a combination too...

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I added a manfroto stablizer so mount the lens on your pod and the stabilizer goes from the lens to the pod. 3 point stability. About $85 at bnh

Normally, you could/should mount the pod to the lens collar using a long Arca/Swiss plate to provide balance. For the ultimate in stability, you could/should use one of these -

Attach the LENS to the monopod if it has an attachment point. Also consider a RRS tilt head. Check out Really Right Stuff. Best of luck.

Basic rule: If the lens has a mounting foot then you attach the lens to either the monopod or the tripod.
This reduces the stress on the camera connection between the body and the lens.

ALWAYS THE LENS MOUNT, IF THE LENS HAS ONE.
