The way I've always done it is to go the Finder, find the *.app file for the program you wish to delete and drag it to the trash basket.

Depends on the software. Some of the higher end programs contain their own uninstall software features, check yours. For the low-end, cheap hard drive wasters just use finder and "move to trash".

That’s a timely topic because I want to uninstall the Google Chrome browser. Prefer Safari!

Right, dragging the icon of an app from the Applications Window (not from the Dock) and THEN emptying the trash will delete the app itself and this is all that is needed for most apps. This will/may leave some bits and pieces of the app on your machine, like preference files, plist files and other things. These usually don't harm the use of any other apps or the system itself, but as noted, some apps have uninstall apps which claim to remove ALL bits and pieces, so its a good practice to see if the app you want to remove has an uninstaller and if so, use it.

I found this on how to totally remove Chrome from a Mac: https://www.fonepaw.com/eraser/uninstall-chrome-on-mac.html

Alternatively, just remove it from your Dock but leave it on the machine. There are some websites that may work better in Chrome than Safari so if you do it this way, you can always go to Applications, and open Chrome again. That's what I generally do unless I'm really sure I will never use a program again!

This method leaves things in the "Library". Too bad all programs don't come with an uninstall program.

So useful of you to take the time to spell it out in such detail.

I never really completed installing Chrome because it wanted too much personal information before it would ‘accept’ me! Now every time I fire up the MAC it overrides other apps by informing me that I still haven’t entered what I had for breakfast!!

So your advice is valuable!

Thank you!

I use AppZapper to make sure I get all files deleted. You just install appzapper and then drag the app that you want to delete onto app zapper and it gathers all of the files for deletion.

I just had the problem of removing Poker stars from my iMac.. After some research I found the app: app Cleaner to work at removing the app icon but also showing all files associated with it. You then have the option of removing everything or you can save certain files and then remove the rest. Its not an app from the App store so you must treat it by allowing it on your computer with firewall turned off. It works great and because I wasn't sure about its safety and operation I initially removed several old apps that I no longer use from my computer and it convinced me to use it. Hope this helps......
