I think it is wise to take a tour rather than venture out on your own. Inner cities can be dangerous. Good luck and have fun.

Maybe consider adding a Kevlar vest to your equipment if you're considering 'walking' around St Louis' abandoned areas

There are several areas in St. Louis with old buildings and many are vacant. I will not go into any of these areas without a police escort. There are off duty police that you can hire to escort you if you are serious about it.
The Laclede Landing area is right on the river near the Arch. Soulard is just a mile or so south of the Arch. I will go into both of these areas, but not alone. And I am very cautious in both of them. But if you really want vacant buildings, BE CAREFUL, even with an escort.

there are crime maps available with simple search question.....crime is above national average for st louis.

St. Louis is listed as the murder capital of the US. Unfortunately I think the crime maps run about a year or more behind so ok for research but not good information for the present.

Depending on the day, Chicago, Baltimore, DC, Detroit, etc, could defend that title.

They are all close seconds but I was a little surprised that St. Louis was the leader.

las Vages will be the new leader with the mass shooting, Orlando moved up to #20 The FBI list is interesting but statistics lag a couple of years and only cities over 25,000 pop. Gary In is #5 ?

I am long retired from a "District Office" education job in west-central Florida (then the 19th largest school district in the nation). Some years ago, a group from our district traveled the country, looking for successful "Magnet" programs....seeking background statistics on what worked and what didn't. (Geeee, what a concept. Investigate the imperial data before jumping in?) We visited many places: NYC, California, Texas, and St. Louis. I made an appointment to meet with the Superintendents of each of those school districts. All were gracious and proud of their systems.
What I saw, was that in the St. Louis district that I visited, their premeir educational programs.....funded largely (multi-millions) by Federal dollars....were incredibly substandard to what we already offered in each of our 16 high schools with local funds.. I am not in a position to condemn nor speculate, but I have to wonder.....
So sad to see a once thriving, prosperous area in decay and social decline. I think the seed has gone bad.

Twill, I've taken many wonderful images in Laclede's Landing, but there is so many more than can be found there. I'm with you in that I don't like shooting my camera in many places when I'm by myself. Keep in mind, eye and attention through the viewfinder means you are out of touch of what is around you. Then again, I grew up in Chicago, so I acquired a 'cautious' eye there. But you are very correct, there are so many photo ops around our city and county.
If a number of us joined together, we could possibly fund an off-duty officer to join us. Hey, he or she might even be a photographer too.
