Nice set, Corky. Doesn't the D7100 have two card slots? Shouldn't your images be on the second card? Or, were you only using one card in your camera? Glad you got the shots you did my friend.

Great story, Corky, and some very nice shots to go along! I see Pileateds fairly frequently and they are just as shy as yours. It is very difficult to get close to them. The Flickers are really attractive birds but as far as I know they don’t come here at all. You were lucky to have these guys where you could get a few shots and I’m glad your camera was close by.

Last Friday while working at the desktop I happened to glance out a nearby window which overlooks the front lawn and noticed what I initially thought were two squirrels playing near the base of a very old black walnut tree were two pileated woodpeckers! I grabbed my camera which had the 150-600 lens attached and went into an adjacent room which had a little better angle of view from its window, and quietly eased up the bottom sash enough to allow the barrel of the lens through and had fired off several rapid shots before I noticed the "E" appearing on the right side of the viewfinder and realized that I had failed to replace the memory card after using it to download some images the night before. I ran back and retrieved the card. Now again looking through the viewfinder I realized that instead of two pileated, we now had only one, plus a pair of northern yellow-shafted flickers and they were feeding on something inside of three sizable holes that they had drilled near the base of the old tree. I think that the prey were carpenter ants and the woodpeckers were feeding on the ones within the tree and apparently the ones on the ground! All images were taken from a distance of 90 feet, so moved our rolling blind (a little camper van) to shorten the distance and spent about three hours waiting the next morning with no results other than a few decent images of other small birds.

Excellent set Corky. Now if that was me I'd have come back to seeing them fly away.

Corky, excellent captures of a not so common Woodpecker.

Corky, just reading your first five words, I had to laugh... another pc adventure for you, but I'm glad you got this message to me! Sad if this old tree has limited time, but with this crazy weather, it's best you take care of it. I heard there were hail storms in some Southern states that caused massive damage... and tornado warnings, also the other day, earthquakes in Oklahoma!! They're saying we might get 12-16", but we shall see... I'm hoping they're wrong again!

Take care and hope this storm passes you by!!

Yes, the weather has really been crazy, and the weather channel was saying that this is the forth nor'easter this month. On high tide, the water was just an inch or so over the pier walkway yesterday, and know that you don't need 12+ inches of snow to deal with now! It's just breaking light here so just took a peep outside and no white stuff! While watching the weather report I was saying that we should be in Florida and about then they started giving tornado warnings for a sizeable part of that state so it looks like there's no place to hide. Good luck and take care! PS I just fed the birds and now looking out the snow is coming down mixed with rain!

Mamy thanks for the kind words and smiley faces, Merry, and it seems like every once in a great while something like this happens to me---think the bird Gods must have blessed me for looking out for them! Thanks again and take care!

Excellent shots! Pileated woodpeckers are my favorite! I had a nesting pair last summer and they brought their baby to our suet feeders. They do seem to love suet so maybe if you put some out there, it'll keep them coming back. I see ours almost daily now, although that hasn't always been the case. They are shy birds but they seem to be getting more used to people and will come when we're sitting outside. (Not today...we have 4 inches of new snow this morning!). I love their loud cackling noise they use to announce their arrival. Hope you get to see yours again. If you do, be ready with your camera and share your pics with us! Lucky you have flickers, too. I have not seen one here in a long time.

Thanks, Ken, and when I'm just shooting around the house I usually use just one card, and peeking out the window as I'm typing there's no action around the old walnut tree but closer to the house where I put out sine feed under the dogwood tree are two crows, numerous red-wings, grackles, a house finch and a red-bellied woodpecker. Thanks again and take care!

Wonderful shots Corky...Flickers have been a favorite of mine since I was a child. I love their size & coloration. We lived in the middle of almond orchards back then & I spent hours lying on my back watching them & so many other birds, bever knew the names of any beyond woodpecker or Blue Jay. I have never seen a Pileated but we have them here so someday....? I really enjoyed these pics, thanks.

Thanks, Carol, and you never know, do you? I hadn't seen any flickers for probably several years until several weeks ago when I just caught a glimpse of one. Ellen seems to find new ones better than me and sometimes when she's in the computer room looking out of the window she will say "what's that bird' and it's a frantic race to find the binoculars! It's now snowing/raining here but the outside temperature is 34 so hopefully this whiteness will be very temporary! Thanks again and take are!

Thanks for the kind words and the two thumbs, Jack and have been keeping an eye out, but the only sighting has been a squirrel! Take care!

Many thanks, Greg, and you must have brought me luck---just looked out the window and there was the oriole on the mealworm basket. The red-bellied just ran him off, but he is now back on a limb above the feeder---wish you were here!! I hadn't seen him but one time in the past two weeks! We've had a little rain and snow this morning, but has almost stopped for at least a few minutes Thanks again for the kind words and the four thumbs and take care! Corky
