Yesterday, a 16th Seeded Basketball Team, called UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County) defeated the overall #1 Seeded team, the University of Virginia, by 20 points. Score. 74-54. This first victory was the first of 135 attempts in the NCAA Tournament, by a 16th Seeded team playing a #1 Seed. UMBC plays 9th Seeded Kansas State on Sunday. That game will have high TV ratings. Can UMBC do it again?

I absolutely hope UMBC crushes Kansas State like they did to Virginia.

How random does it get:
I was on vacation in Aruba and Friday night my 10 year old grandson was looking at the schedule and asked me who this "UMBC" school was, I had no clue. He said it probably didn't matter 'cause UVA would "crush" them. It was the late game so we went to bed and the next morning didn't know what happened.
Saturday morning we're on the elevator going down to the beach and my grandson says: "I wonder what happened to those UMBC guys last night?"
A woman on the elevator gets hysterical laughing and her husband starts talking but has laryngitis and can't get a word out. His wife tells us they won and he lost his voice screaming during the game. She was surprised everyone in the hotel didn't hear him. Turns out he's an alum AND former chess player.
Go Retrievers👍

The Richmond Times Dispatch Newspaper article about the defeat was critical towards the Coach, Tony Bennett. Yes, that's his real name. They said that a team with an ACC Championship, the toughest conference in the nation. And to be the #1 Seed in the Tournament, as well as #1 in the nation. Put on an embarrassing performance. It's not that they were beaten, but how they were beaten. The Article compared this to the defeat of the Spanish Armada of 1588 by the British. Wow!!

Virginia simply couldn't hit crapola while the other team played very well. Virginia was first in the ACC and had kicked butt on everybody they met. I told my friends that "yes, they lost, but they still set a record!!" I'm rooting for Duke and Carolina now.

Roy Williams and Coach K. They own North Carolina, like Nick Saban owns Alabama.

I never watch sports other than the Olympics, but when a NC basketball team from the Triangle (Duke, UNC, NC State) succeeds in the NCAA championship as it has MANY times in the past - 13 championships for those 3 schools so far (I graduated from NCSU the year we won the championship), we DO take it seriously. Basketball spoken here!

That's OK. You have two very good NFL football teams in Pennsylvania now. Plus Penn State Football. Pretty good choices.

Hope they slaughter Kansas then eventually get eliminated by UNC.

$800 would have got you $16,000 on one board. 20:1. I would have thought it would be higher.

It's not likely UMBC will go all the way to the Championship Game. But making history defeating Virginia and going to the Sweet 16 is still SWEET enough. IMO. If they beat Kansas State?

UMBC just filed a Patent for their upset victory over Virginia. "16 Over 1."
